Off Season by Anne Rivers Siddons: Review

Wednesday, July 22, 2009 Posted by Dina N

Off Season is the first Anne Rivers Siddons book that I have read. Rivers Siddons is the bestselling author of 16 other novels, and now I feel I need to read every one of them.

Lilly, the book's main character, is a woman in her 50s who has just been widowed. She travels with her husband's ashes to their favorite spot off the coast of Maine, and in the process, tells the story of her life. From growing up enjoying summers in Maine with her perfect family, to falling in love for the first time and encountering tragedy and loss, Lilly's journey has been filled with beauty and emotion. The author masterfully depicts both the picturesque Maine nature and the feelings of Lilly and the people who surround her. I loved Lilly's character and, along with her, experienced joy and grief, excitement and despair. Her parents' characters - the university professor and the beautiful, accomplished painter and activist - are convincing and complex. This is one of these books I did not want to end. Speaking of endings, Off Season's finale is surprising and would be unexpected for many - it certainly was for me.

Off Season is a wonderful book, and I recommend that you read it. You can buy it at book retailers, or enter my giveaway by 7/28 to win one of five copies!

Many thanks to Hachette Book Group for this review opportunity.
