Book Review: Breaking the Bank by Yona Zeldis McDonough

Earlier this month, I hosted a guest post by writer Yona Zeldis McDonough and participated in the blog tour for her new book, Breaking the Bank. In this fascinating read, Mia Saul, a divorced mom, discovers that an ATM gives her thousands of dollars for free, without deducting the money from her account. Apart from this miraculous event, Mia's life is pretty ordinary. She struggles to make ends meet, works two jobs, tries to be a good parent and to come to terms with her ex-husband's betrayal. Although her life is similar to that of many others, Mia is an extraordinary person. Her sudden windfall somewhat improves her desperate circumstances but has no effect on who she is. Mia still gives money away to strangers - just as she would when she had next to nothing herself. Breaking the Bank makes me think about the old saying that money changes a person. In this story, it does not. Money also does not make Mia feel happy, loved, or fulfilled - but the change of luck brought along by the magical ATM machine helps her get control over her life, and discover that she is stronger than she thinks.

Breaking the Bank is a modern tale with unexpected twists and turns, and keeps the reader guessing until the last page. I recommend that you read it, and think about all those times you wished you had more money - or a little magic - in your life.
