The Green Thirteen #13: King Arthur Flour Review

Friday, November 27, 2009 Posted by Dina N

The aroma of freshly baked bread is filling my house. Is there anything more delicious on a cold morning? Or any other time! The kids are digging in, smearing butter and strawberry jam. My husband likes to dip the warm morsels in a mix of olive oil, salt and paprika. And I love the bread just plain - for me it's perfect as it is.

I've been baking with King Arthur Flour ever since I started using a bread machine. We have sampled several of their flours, and the bread comes out just right every time. For this review, King Arthur Flour sent me a 2 lbs. bag of their new 100% Organic White Whole Wheat Flour. This flour is certified USDA organic, and contains no bleach or preservatives. I made a 1.5 pound loaf, using the express bake recipe for traditional-style white bread. Pretty soon, the delicious aroma of bread wafted through the house. In less than an hour, voila - the loaf was ready.

Compared to the same recipe using white flour, this bread was darker and more dense. The look and taste were unmistakably whole wheat but without the slightly bitter taste that sometimes comes with whole wheat flour. This type of flour is milder and bakes lighter than traditional whole wheat. We found the bread made with white whole wheat more filling compared to white bread, probably because white whole wheat contains more fiber than white flour. For me, it has a completely different texture and flavor. Everyone at home loved it! In addition to baking bread, white whole wheat flour can be used to replace white flour in other recipes as well. We will definitely use the organic white whole wheat flour again!

King Arthur Flour are giving away a box of stollen mix to one of my readers! Go here to enter the giveaway.

You've certainly been using King Arthur products for a long time and seem to enjoy them. That's good enough for me. I have every intention of picking up a few of their mixes to bake for the holiday.

I am always interested in organic whole wheat flour since it is much healthier for my family. I have not heard of King Arthur white whole wheat bread since it is not sold in the stores I normally shop in. After reading this review, I have decided that I need to go one of the identified stores and get some flour to try out with my family. Thank you for reviewing this product and enlightening me about it.

I try to eat Whole Wheat bread but I don't like the bitter taste. I am glad to find out from your review that King Arthur flour does not have the bitter taste and it is lighter.

I have seen it in the store and now I will have to buy it!

I love their white whole wheat. I use it, but I also use regular whole wheat, too, in fact, I like to experiment with as many flours as I can find. So much fun!
