My Blog Is Carbon Neutral!

Sunday, March 28, 2010 Posted by Dina N

Last night, I powered down and turned off the lights for Earth Hour. As I was sitting in the dark during a time I usually spend at the computer, I was wondering how much energy - of the non-renewable kind - my blogging uses up every day. Imagine my excitement this morning when I read about a new green project on Northern Mama's blog.

A group of people in Germany is helping make blogs and websites carbon-neutral! My Blog Is Carbon Neutral is an initiative started by the Make it Green program aiming to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. They plant a tree for your blog and offset its carbon footprint for the next 50 years. How cool is that!

According to a study by Alexander Wissner-Gross, PhD, a physicist at Harvard University and environmental activist, an average website causes about 0.02g (0,0008oz.) of carbon dioxide for each visit. Assuming an average blog gets 15,000 visits a month, it has yearly carbon dioxide emissions of 3,6kg (8lb.). This can mainly be tracked back to the immense energy usage from (mainframe) computers, servers, and their cooling systems.

The trees are planted in Plumas National Forest in Northern California by the Arbor Day Foundation, the U.S. partner for My Blog Is Carbon Neutral. The Arbor Day Foundation is a non-profit conservation and education organization with the goal helping reforest 5,500 acres of Plumas National Forest with 792,000 trees.

Read how you can join and have a tree planted for your site or blog! I am proud to say that now my blog is carbon neutral. Is yours?
