Book Review and Blog Tour: In the Shadow of the Cypress by Thomas Steinbeck

Book Description
IN THE SHADOW OF THE CYPRESS is the first full-length novel from Thomas Steinbeck, author of the critically-acclaimed collection Down to a Soundless Sea and son of John Steinbeck. CYPRESS is centered on the mysterious discovery--and subsequent disappearance--of ancient jade artifacts on California's Monterey Peninsula  in the early 1900s. Their existence, if authenticated, would indicate a very early Asian presence in the New World. The proper fate of these sacred stones creates tension among existing tongs until the objects go missing.  The truth of their whereabouts remains a puzzle that two young scholars nearly a hundred years later attempt to solve.

My Review
IN THE SHADOW OF THE CYPRESS is an engrossing, intelligent read. The story starts over a hundred years ago with the discovery of ancient objects that can change modern history as we know it. A century later, the mystery is revisited by two young men who are determined to shed light on the artifacts' story.

The book takes readers on a fascinating adventure, and narrates the secrets of these artifacts in several distinct voices. The first two are a scholar and a highly educated Chinese nobleman who come across the treasure in early 1900s. The author masterfully recreates the atmosphere, customs, and culture of Monterey Bay and its inhabitants. The search for the artifacts and the truth they represent continues in modern day California with the contemporary counterparts of the scholar and the Chinese nobleman. Armed with the technical advances of our age, the two young men try to solve the mystery.

In the Shadow of the Cypress is a wonderful treasure of a book that I would definitely read again. It is also quite the engaging page turner and worthy of a talent that bears the Steinbeck name.
