Seventh Generation Green Cleaning Pack: Review and Giveaway (Ends 4/29) CLOSED
As a company that helps us make green choices, Seventh Generation requires no introduction. For the past 20 years, Seventh Generation has been providing environmentally friendly cleaning products, baby items, and more.
The latest addition to their outstanding line of eco-friendly products is an EPA registered line of disinfecting sprays and wipes that kill germs naturally! The new line of botanical disinfectant cleaners includes a multi-surface cleaning spray, bathroom cleaning spray and wipes.
The disinfectants contain thymol, a component of the herb thyme, and can be used on hard surfaces including counter tops, plastic cutting boards, highchair trays as well as children’s toys. Best of all, they kill over 99.99 percent of germs naturally and are effective against the Influenza A Virus, including H1N1.
I love using the bathroom cleaning spray to clean my shower and tub, and the multi-surface spray is what I grab to disinfect kitchen surfaces after cleaning. The wipes are wonderful for quick clean-up.
To help in our quest for greener lifestyle, Seventh Generation has partnered with eco-lifestyle consultant and author, Alexandra Zissu. Thanks to MyBlogSpark, I received some of Seventh Generation new products pictured above and had the opportunity to read her new book, The Conscious Kitchen. This fascinating green guide packs a wealth of useful advice and information in a compact, easy to understand format. Zissu successfully combines what tastes good with what’s good for your health and for the planet. Some of the information was not new to me but important things bear repeating, and I learned more than I expected from such a small volume.
Her book also includes great tips on maintaining a green and healthy kitchen, including:
Change is Good
Choosing cleaning products without indoor air pollutants like volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, is a simple and effective way to reduce your indoor air pollution. If you’re not prepared to switch everything overnight, start by swapping out the one product you use the most, and moving forward from there.
Think before you spray
Residues from cleaning products can last on a surface for longer than we we’d like to know and travel to areas that we sometimes don’t intend them to. Don’t contaminate your food by prepping it on a surface that may contain harsh chemical residues - rinse cleaning products from food preparation surfaces carefully or use botanical disinfecting cleaners that do not require a rinse step.
Home is Where the Clean Is
Your standard cleaners are good for removing soils and dirt from kitchen surfaces, but to tackle germs you need a cleaner that is effective against microbes like bacteria and viruses. Many cleaners contain ingredients that have antimicrobial properties such as vinegar or hydrogen peroxide, but the germ killing power of these is not necessarily guaranteed. To be sure you are killing germs, use an EPA registered disinfectant. Seventh Generation tapped into the disinfecting power of the common garden herb thyme, to provide a disinfecting cleaner that kills germs naturally.
Make the Old New Again
Think twice about the items that you’re using to clean and dry your kitchen equipment and dishes. Use rags (like old t-shirts and washcloths) instead of paper towels. If you aren’t prepared to kick your paper towel addiction just yet, use only recycled versions that are unbleached or haven’t been whitened with chemicals containing chlorine and see how long you can make a roll last.
The Writing is on the… Sponge
Be sure to read the fine print on sponges and only purchase those that do not contain antimicrobial pesticides. Remember to store sponges in a dry place and frequently clean them by popping plastic sponges wet in a microwave for two minutes or boiling sponges for three minutes in water.
Mom Was Right, Wash Your Hands
Wash your hands with soap and water before and after prepping food, and always before eating. So much of what can be potentially harmful in a kitchen can be reduced by this simple act that doesn’t require any harsh chemicals whatsoever.
The Giveaway
One reader will receive a Seventh Generation “Disinfecting Cleaning Kit” - including disinfecting multi-surface cleaner, bathroom cleaner, wipes, a copy of The Conscious Kitchen, a cleaning caddy made from recycled plastic, and two rolls of 100% recycled, unbleached paper towels!
To enter, please comment below what's the best thing you've done for the environment recently.

Please enter me in this giveaway! The latest thing I've done for the environment is to replace my broken washer and dryer with a HE unit. It uses less water, and less detergent to wash larger loads. The only loser here is me--more laundry to fold! =P

i've been using a diva cup monthly for seven years now, and i also use reusable pads (the ones from yurtcraft on etsy are the best). they're so much BETTER, and less expensive, as well as being a green choice.
lately, i've been meaning to cut up a ripped-up old sheet into pieces to use instead of paper towels.
April 15, 2010 at 6:33 PM
I went to Kroger's floral dept. and asked them to save me the large buckets that the flowers come in(they just toss them out). They saved me about 20 of them and I am going to use them to increase the size of my garden. They are perfect to grow tomatoes in.

I recycle, reuse, remake, etc. as much as possible. I stopped buying commercial cat litter and use newspapers in the litter box. I don't even have to shred them. The cats have kindly continued to use the litter box with no problems. I was taking the newspapers to the recycling bin and buying expensive low-dust clumping litter. I have asthma and I am allergic to dust so the newspapers are a great change!

The best thing I've done for the environment is to drastically cut down on using disposable items such as paper towels and paper plates. I also try to shop for greener products

The best thing I've done for the environment recently is switched out the shower heads and installed low flow ones to save water and changed the light bulbs to more energy efficient ones to save electricity .

I started unplugging appliances (microwave, kettle, router) when they're not being used. I check right before I leave for work and when I go to bed to make sure everything is unplugged. No sense in wasting energy!
I'm also starting to line dry my clothing again, now that the sun is cooperating. Line dried laundry is one of the best smells in the world!

The best thing I have done for the environment lately is I have started composting. We are trying to cut down on the waste we put into landfills and composting does that. It was a big step for us since we had been talking about doing it for over a year. We also joined a local CSA to purchase organic produce. And we stopped buying grain fed beef and instead bought a half of a grass fed steer.

we use only reusable grocery bags. we drink filtered tap water, we pack our lunches in washable reusable containers, we use cloth napkins instead of paper, we use washable plates to eat on. We use HE washer and dryer, and an HE dishwasher. and many many other things I could go on about as well.
