Book Description
An angry rebel, John dropped out of school and enlisted in the Army, not knowing what else to do with his life - until he meets the girl of his dreams, Savannah. Their mutual attraction quickly grows into the kind of love that leaves Savannah waiting for John to finish his tour of duty, and John wanting to settle down with the woman who captured his heart. But 9/11 changes everything. John feels it is his duty to re-enlist. And sadly, the long separation finds Savannah falling in love with someone else.

My Review
Dear John starts like many other love stories: boy meets girl, they fall in love, boy is in the Army, girl finds someone else. Yes, it's beautiful, it's sincere, it's life-changing for John and Savannah - but hardly extraordinary. Yet, Dear John is not your average romance novel. Sparks writes an enticing book about love and the way it changes people, bringing out the best in them. John is an ordinary guy who has found the love of his life. Until Savannah leaves him for someone else, the depth and sincerity of John's feelings for her are remarkable but not unique. What really sets this romance apart is the strength he discovers to make the ultimate self sacrifice for the woman he loves. His noble gesture remains anonymous for everyone, including Savannah - and their story becomes more beautiful and at the same time heartbreaking. Although it's not a happily-ever-after story in a typical way, Dear John is bizarrely uplifting.
