The Spring Green #28: Organic Bug Control with EcoSMART Review

Thursday, May 06, 2010 Posted by Dina N

My daughter does not like ants. Ever since an unfortunate incident with a bunch of red ants in the park, she gets quite upset at the sight of bugs. Last year, we had an ants problem in the kitchen, and every time she saw even the tiniest of ants, she would cry "Spider! Spider!" and the offending insect had to be removed immediately.

I am against using questionable chemicals around the house, and last year I tried all kinds of natural ways to get rid of the ants without much success. Luckily, when I saw ants in the kitchen again last week, I had access to organic bug control.

EcoSMART makes a line of safe pesticides that includes organic home pest control. EcoSMART was the first company to apply modern science to essential plant oils. Their products are based on the natural defenses that plants and trees use for self protection against insects and pathogens – essential oils. Since EcoSMART’s blends attack attributes that are specific only to pests, they have no effect on people, pets or the environment.

I had the opportunity to try four of their products: the Weed Grass Killer, the Insect Repellent, the Home Pest Control and Lawn Insect Killer. All four come in spray bottles and are very easy to use. For me, it is very important that the products are organic, safe to use around kids and pets, and environmentally safe. An added perk of the essential oils used in EcoSMART products is that all of them smell great! I found the products to be very effective.

First, I tried the Home Pest Control. This is an organic insecticide that gets rid of over 100 home invading pests. It can be used safely inside and outside the house. Unlike other insecticides, it is made from organic plant oils and leaves no pesticide residue. Since it contains essential oils, it has a strong but pleasant smell that did not bother me at all. The fresh scent indicates the product is working. I do suggest that you crack open a window if you use it indoors and are sensitive to scents.

The next product I tried was the Lawn Insect Killer. The sprayer is attached to the water hose and you basically water with it the areas that need treatment. It can be used on lawns, trees, shrubs and flowers, as well as around the house foundations, porches and patios. Since we have an ants problem, I used it to keep them from entering the house. For this, it is recommended that you cover a 2 foot band around the house as well as spray the foundation up to 2 feet high.

The Weed Grass Killer is great for all these areas where you don't want any grass or weeds: patios, driveways, walkways, and other areas. It is useful if you want to get rid of any vegetation. I sprayed the few places where grass was sprouting in the driveaway, with good results. The product will work best if applied during warm, sunny weather.

My husband was the first in the family to try the Organic Insect Repellent. A couple of weeks ago, he went fishing and I am delighted to report that after three days in the wilderness, he came back without so much as a mosquito bite. Well, no fish either but he did have a great time, sans bugs! The insect repellent does not contain DEET or other synthetic chemicals. I will definitely use this product for the whole family.

You can check out the entire selection of EcoSMART products on their website. They can be purchased individually or in value bundles. You can also enter to win all four products I reviewed here!

I am really uncomfortable using toxic pest control products too...but, living in Alabama, pest control is a necessity. I will check out these products!
