Shey Darcy, a 39-year-old former top model for Vogue and Sports Illustrated led a charmed life in New York City with a handsome photographer husband until the day he announced he'd fallen in love with someone else. Left to pick up the pieces of her once happy world, Shey decides to move back home to Texas with her three teenage sons. Life on the family ranch, however, brings with it a whole new host of dramas starting with differences of opinion with her staunch Southern Baptist mother, her rugged but overprotective brothers, and daily battles with her three sons who are also struggling to find themselves.
Apart from being a former top-model, Shey is just like many other women. Heartbroken and confused after her husband of 17 years has left her to come officially out of the closet, Shey struggles to find a new place in the world for herself and what's left of her family. She runs away from New York and goes back to her tiny Texas hometown with her three sons in tow. Torn between her desire to do what's best for her kids and her wish for a quiet life away from New York, Shey's got her work cut out for her. A meddling mother, overprotective brothers, sons who miss their old life, and the man who she loved when she was 16, make Shey wonder if she made a mistake moving back to her roots.
I enjoyed reading She's Gone Country, although Shey tends to go around the same problems in circles, and to drone on and on about the manliness of her former flame. I can imagine the character is supposedly uncertain of her femininity because her husband left their marriage. And yes, her ex beau is the polar opposite of the soon-to-be ex husband. We get it: this Texan is the real deal. No need to repeat it fifty times or so. Thankfully, Shey is pretty much down to earth the rest of the time, and a likable character. You'll be reading and hoping - like me - that things end well for her.
