Holiday Gift Guide 2010: Helmtops Review

Wednesday, November 17, 2010 Posted by Dina N

My kids love their bikes. They used to love their safety gear almost as much. Now they see it as a bit of a nuisance, groaning and complaining that the bike helmets are too tight, too small, too big, too warm - you name it, I've heard it.

Helmtops is a new company created on the idea that it'd be easier to get children to wear their bike helmets if they could decorate them. We received two, and my kids started wearing their helmets inside the house - voluntarily. Not that they needed to, but we are a step closer to donning that safety gear without complaints. These little rubbery charms allow them to express their individuality making the helmets more uniquely their own.

One thing I really like about them - in addition getting my kids to love their bike helmets again - is that the Helmtops are not stickers to peel off, and do not need to be glued onto the helmets. They fasten through the holes on the top of the helmets, and since they are soft and rubbery, the kids don't even feel them. But they can see them, and so can everyone else! Kids can fit one or several, mix and match as much as they want. Helmtops come in 8 fun designs including star, butterfly, flower and pirate.

Helmtops were awarded a 2010 Seal of Excellence from Creative Child Magazine and are sold in bike stores, toy stores and online. This holiday season, they would make great stocking stuffers for kids - and at $3.99 each, they are an affordable and useful accessory.
