Today Is America Recycles Day

Monday, November 15, 2010 Posted by Dina N

Today, November 15, is America Recycles Day. Celebrated since 1997, this is the only nationally recognized day dedicated to promoting recycling in the U.S. At my house, every day is recycle day. We also try to do the other two Rs as much as possible - reuse and reduce.

I have some timely information to share, courtesy of iolo technologies, the company that makes the DriveScrubber software.

According to the Consumer Electronics Association, Americans own approximately 24 electronic products per household. With Black Friday just around the corner, consumers are sure to stock up on new shiny goodies like a brand new computer. This often means disposing of old e-items. In the U.S., 63.3 million computer desktops will be taken out of service this coming year alone, according to the National Safety Council and the EPA. 85% of them will end up in landfills across the country, constituting an ever-growing environmental hazard.

We can do our part to put an end to this by properly recycling and donating our unused computers. Most Americans know that the old computer is supposed to be recycled, but are worried about the safety of all the personal data that might still be in the PC if it falls in the wrong hands.

Enter iolo technologies’ DriveScrubber, the #1 best-selling software that securely wipes data from hard drives. It overwrites and removes data permanently, by using strict government and military standards, beyond any possible recovery methods. DriveScrubber can make it easier to “celebrate” America Recycles Day, and with peace of mind.

P.S. Did you know… recycling 1 million desktop computers is like keeping 16,000 passenger cars off the road for a year, according to the EPA!

Disclaimer / Disclosure: I will receive a free copy of DriveScrubber to test out. No monetary compensation was provided for this post.

I didn't know that U.S. had a day for that. Wonder if Canada does. In our family, we have come a long way, when it comes to recycling. It is so important.
