Book Giveaway: Corked by Kathryn Borel (Ends 3/14) CLOSED

Sunday, February 28, 2010 Posted by Dina

Today, I have a new memoir for you! Thanks to Hachette Book Group, another book giveaway - this time, it's Corked by Kathryn Borel. I am reading it right now, and can tell you it's about a father and daughter on a trip of picturesque French wineries, trying to get closer and know each other better. Stay tuned for my forthcoming review!

Book Description
Meet Kathryn Borel, bon vivant and undutiful daughter. Now meet her father, Philippe, former chef, eccentric genius, and wine aficionado extraordinaire. Kathryn is like her father in every way but one: she's totally ignorant when it comes to wine. And although Philippe has devoted untold parenting hours to delivering impassioned oenological orations, she has managed to remain unenlightened. But after an accident and a death, Kathryn realizes that by shutting herself off to her father's greatest passion, she will never really know him.

About the Author
Kathryn Borel was born in 1979 in Toronto, the daughter of a hotelier.

After several years, she became the older sister to Nico, who was named after the family cat. She spent her early years living in hotels in Paris, Bermuda, Dallas, and New Jersey, finally settling in Quebec City.

In 2002 she moved to Toronto to follow a man. The relationship ended.

She continues to live in Toronto where she works at the Canadian Broadcasting Company. She has written food and wine reviews for radio and print. Her journalism includes a column which ran in the National Post under the title "Indignities." Corked is her first book.

Win a Bare Necessities Package from Sweet Leaf Bath Co: Review and Giveaway (Ends 3/14) CLOSED

Friday, February 26, 2010 Posted by Dina

I love yummy bath products. When I came across Sweet Leaf Bath Co., I browsed their deliciously looking collection for a long time. They offer soaps, lip balms, body butters and scrubs, bath soaks and balms - oh my! Just what a girl needs for some bath time relaxation and pampering.

Mother and daughter Rose Creamer and Stacey Guymer created Sweet Leaf Bath Co. in the fall of 2007. Combining Stacey’s aromatherapy background and Rose’s artistic talent, they began creating a line of natural, organic and fair trade soaps. They gradually added more products, using pure essential oils, botanicals and fair trade ingredients. The majority of Sweet Leaf Bath Co. products are Fair Trade Certified by TransFair Canada.

I received a bar of their Oatmeal Honey & Goats Milk, and a lip balm. The soap - just as all Sweet Leaf Bath soaps - is handmade in small batches using natural, organic and Fair Trade Certified ingredients. Sweet Leaf Bath soaps are free from synthetic fragrances, dyes and additives. The Oatmeal Honey & Goats Milk bar was creamy and produced just the right amount of lather. I love its delicate scent! This soap contains: Water, Saponified Oils of Olive, Coconut and Organic Palm, Organic Fair Trade Shea Butter, Castor Oil, Sunflower Oil, Organic Honey, Organic Goat Milk, Organic Oatmeal, Vegetable Steric Acid. No mystery chemical compounds here! The bar is a generous 4 oz. The soap did not dry or irritate my skin, and I enjoyed using it daily.

The beeswax lip balm I tried is made with: Natural Beeswax, Avocado Oil, Organic Fair Trade Certified Shea Butter, Jojoba Oil, Vitamin E, Peppermint Essential Oil. It has a light minty scent from the peppermint, and it feels great on my lips. The natural oils and butters nourished and protected my skin from the cold. My kids loved it, too!

The Giveaway
Sweet Leaf Bath Co. are giving away a bare necessities package to a lucky reader of this blog! The package contains a bar of soap, an 8 oz bath soak and a lip balm. Take a look at the picture!

The winner can choose from Citrus Splash, Chocolate Peppermint, Rosemary Mint or Oatmeal Honey. Yummy! This set would make a great gift, too. I wish I could enter...

Joyful Girl Natural: Review and Giveaway (Ends 3/14) CLOSED

Friday, February 26, 2010 Posted by Dina

I have a busy life, and like to keep my beauty routine short and sweet. One thing I never skip is moisturizing my face - morning and night - and taking good care of my hands. My skin is on the dry and sensitive side, and that is especially true in winter. I've started using more natural creams recently, and I am loving the results!

So I was delighted to try two of the creations of Joyful Girl Natural. Shelly, the woman behind this shop, has been making natural and organic bath and body products as well as herbal remedies for over 20 years. She started selling her products about 4 years ago. Shelly makes her products from scratch and can easily customize any of her products to meet your skin care needs.

The Joyful Girl Natural products include body care for babies, toddlers, new moms, cats and dogs, and more! There are even products for the man in your life. Here is a full list of Shelly's product lines:

Joyful Baby
Joyful Canine
Joyful Feline
Joyful Girl
Joyful Home
Joyful Kids
Joyful Mama
Joyful Mama 2 Be
Natural Man
Toddler Tub Time

The first product I received was the Reviving Facial Cream.  This is a natural anti-aging moisturizer to use on the face and neck. The reviving cream comes in an 1 oz glass jar, and is rich and creamy. Here are the ingredients: Organic Green Tea, Organic Organic Aloe Vera Juice, Green Tea Seed Oil, Babassu Oil, Organic Rose Hip Seed Oil, Carrot Seed Oil, Orchid Extract, Soy and Vegetable emulsifying wax , Polyaminopropyl Biguanide (paraben free preservative), Rosemary Extract, Vitamin E oil. I just love it when I can understand what exactly it is that I am putting on my skin! I used the cream in the morning and at night on my face and neck. My skin felt refreshed, nourished and pampered. The cream is unscented but I detected a slight aroma of botanicals. If you want it scented, an essential oil can be added. Shelly says this cream can be used on any skin areas that need TLC.

The other product I got to try was the Soothing Skin Cream. This products comes in a 2 oz tube and is one of Shelly's herbal skin healing creations. Just as the reviving cream, this cream has some organic ingredients, natural oils, and Vitamin E. I used it on my hands - it provided a much needed relief for my dry skin! I wash my hands many times every day, and use creams constantly to keep my skin moisturized. I enjoyed using the Soothing Skin Cream, especially at bedtime, so that my skin could benefit from its nourishing effect all night. This is a wonderful product, and I recommend that you try it.

You can find Shelly's wonderful creams at her Etsy shop, or the Joyful Girl Natural site. Shelly also blogs here

The Giveaway
Joyful Girl Natural are generously giving away a $25 gift certificate to the store to one of my readers!

To enter, please visit Shelly's shops and comment below how you would spend the GC if you won - or let us know what products interest you the most.

Book Review and Giveaway: Totally Toned Arms (Ends 3/6) CLOSED

Friday, February 19, 2010 Posted by Dina

Many of us make New Year's resolutions - including plans to get in shape, exercise more, or eat better. According to some unofficial statistics among my friends, most resolutions fizzle out by Valentine's Day. Still, a new year, a new you - the promise of a fresh start can be exhilarating! Thanks to Hachette Book Group, I have a book that may help. Read on!

Book Description
Once Barack Obama joined the presidential race and attended events with wife at his side, the media, bloggers, and people everywhere started buzzing about Michelle's toned arms--and asking how on earth she does it. Even at the Presidential Inauguration, much of the talk was about Michelle's amazing arms. Media outlets from GMA to CNN to MSNBC have covered the story, inspiring women across the country to call their personal trainers and say, "I want Obama arms!"

Certified personal trainer Rylan Duggan, creator of the successful (and pricey, at $70 each!) e-book series Go Sleeveless!, constantly gets calls from clients and reporters asking for the training secrets behind Michelle's arms. Duggan is the expert quoted in much of this coverage, and in FIGHT ARM FLAB, he offers his 21-day program to get those sleek and sexy arms.

In this low-priced paperback, Duggan reveals the program (combining strength training and cardio) including a 7-day jumpstart maintenance plan, and essential diet secrets designed to shed fat and reveal toned muscle, plus 50-60 black and white photos throughout to illustrate. This is a simple program that anyone can do, no matter what their fitness level, at home and with little equipment. With this series of 25 easy exercises, anyone can have Obama arms--in a matter of weeks!

My Review
I love toned arms - and to get ready for summer sleeveless, now is the time to start working on these biceps! And who better to have in your corner than a professional personal trainer and body-sculpting authority. Since not all of us can afford to hire one, reading his book is the next best thing.

What I found surprising is that - besides the exercises I expected to see - the author focuses on the whole picture: what we need to eat to build muscle, and how to work out - while he points out that trouble-shooting just a single area of your body is a myth. There is a chapter on strength training, one on cardio exercise, and one about the nutrition program. Another chapter details a 21-day plan, and the last part of the book is dedicated to the maintenance plan. I really like the approach, and that every exercise is explained in detail, accompanied by a picture to make things even clearer.

Another great advantage of this book is that the exercises can be done wherever you want: at the gym, while traveling, or in the privacy of your own home. There is no need for special equipment, besides free weights, a stability ball, and resistance bands. At home, you can use chairs instead of a workout bench or machines. If you prefer a gym, for every exercise there is a gym version - followed by the home version.

Totally Toned Arms by Rylan Dugan is a relatively small book, packed with useful information. It is geared towards women, and it will help you improve your overall physical fitness - and get ready to look better in spring and summer clothes, too!

The Giveaway
And now, as promised, thanks to Hachette Book Group, FIVE readers will win a copy of Totally Toned Arms by Rylan Dugan!

To enter, leave a comment sharing how you stay healthy.

Brighter Smile with EvoraPlus: Review and Giveaway (Ends 3/7) CLOSED

Friday, February 19, 2010 Posted by Dina

I love my coffee, black tea, and chocolate. I enjoy the occasional glass of red wine with dinner. It so happens that these favorite drinks and foods of mine do not exactly help keep my teeth white. I've tried teeth whitening toothpaste, rinses, and professional whitening with trays and blinding light - all with varied success. I found most of these options did not work well for me. Some were rather expensive and uncomfortable, with teeth sensitivity an unwelcome side effect.

I was very excited when I read about EvoraPlus - a teeth whitening alternative that is 100% natural. Imagine my delight when I won a month's supply of this product at Mom of 3 Dolls! Thank you, Khrys!

EvoraPlus are probiotic mints that should be taken twice a day, after you brush your teeth. You just let one mint dissolve in your mouth, and that's it! The products does not need to be refrigerated, and one mint contains just 1 calorie, in case you are wondering. The mints support gum and tooth health, freshen breath, and whiten teeth. They tasted very nice, slightly sweet and refreshing, and did not have a sharp mint taste that I generally dislike. EvoraPlus includes patent-pending ProBiora3 probiotics that are naturally present in healthy mouths. They help restore the good bacteria that are important for good oral health.

I started noticing an improvement in my smile in about two weeks. By the end of the 30 days, my teeth were noticeably whiter. I cannot say how many shades but the effect was great! EvoraPlus are safe to use even for kids. Of course, my kiddos pearly whites do not need whitening but I am sure their mouths can benefit from the probiotics in EvoraPlus.

You can get a 30-day supply of EvoraPlus at their website for $19.95 plus shipping and handling. If you buy 2 boxes, shipping is free!

The Giveaway
One of my lucky readers will win a box of EvoraPlus!

To enter, please visit the EvoraPlus site and tell me where else you can buy the mints (hint: look at the bottom of the page).

For extra entries, feel free to do any and all of the following:
  • follow me on twitter and tweet about this giveaway – you can do this once a day, feel free to copy and paste: "Win EvoraPlus teeth whitening mints! Brighter smile, naturally! #giveaway ends 3/7 @evoraplus @aitmama #win http://tinyurl.com/yhas95f";
  • follow EvoraPlus on twitter;
  • go here for additional ways to get extra entries.
The deadline to enter is March 7, 2010, 11:59pm EST. A winner will be randomly selected and notified by e-mail. They will have 72 hours to get back to me, or an alternate will be chosen. Open to those with mailing addresses in the U.S. or Canada. The winner will receive their prize directly from the sponsor.

Tommee Tippee Review and Blog Tour

Friday, February 19, 2010 Posted by Dina

About the Company
Tommee Tippee®, from the UK-based Mayborn Group Limited, is the number-one brand of infant and toddler feeding products in Great Britain. Since 1965, Tommee Tippee has earned a reputation for its clever ideas, product quality and simply intuitive designs that promote natural development at every age, stage and feeding need. Today, Tommee Tippee innovations provide comfort for babies and peace of mind for parents in 45 countries around the world.

Thanks to the Mom Bloggers Club, I am participating in the blog tour to welcome Tommee Tippee products to the U.S.! Beginning in January, their Closer to Nature® baby bottles, nipples, pacifiers and feeding accessories, as well as its Explora® toddler cups and feeding products, can be found at Babies“R”Us stores and online at Babiesrus.com/tommeetippee. In April, the assortment will be available in Toys“R”Us stores nationwide.

My Review
I received a sample of the Tommee Tippee baby bottle and a two-pack of their sippy cups. The first thing that impressed me - apart from the BPA- and Phthalate-free plastic the company uses - was the smart design. These sippy cups and bottles are more than adorable! They are wide for easy cleaning, perfectly shaped for little - and big - hands to hold comfortably, and are as close to nature as a plastic bottle can be. The nipple on the bottle has a wide base, the spouts of the sippies are soft. The sippies are in bright, happy colors that make them easy to spot across the room in that corner or in a dark spot under the bed.

The sippy cups I received are Stage 2 - for babies and toddlers over 9 months. They hold 11 oz. and have little lids that protect the spout. The sippy cups feature the so called advance-flo technology for easy drinking and are spill-proof. The valve pieces consist of two parts that are taken apart for cleaning. Despite being different from what I've seen previously, they are quite easy to take apart and put together.

The baby bottle holds 9 oz. and is similarly quite easy to clean. If you've struggled with bottle brushes and nipple brushes, if you've soaked and scrubbed and boiled water to sterilize these things, you know how important that is. The bottle is designed with an anti-colic valve that prevents air ingestion and leaks. It comes with a slow-flow nipple, and I also received a two-pack of fast-flow nipples. The company also offers med flow and variable flow nipples - all can be used only with Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature bottles.

The bottom line: my kids were very happy with the new additions to their drinking routine, and sipped and slurped happily from the Tommee Tippee cups and bottle.

Book Review: Cleaving by Julie Powell

Saturday, February 13, 2010 Posted by Dina

Last summer, I reviewed Julie & Julia, the literary debut of bored-out-of-her mind office worker turned cook/blogger Julie Powell. She embarks on the ambitious project of making every recipe from Julia Child's The Art of French Cooking in a year. You know by now that she succeeded, and her book was made into a major movie picture starring my favorite Meryl Streep as Julia Child, among an array of other fine actors.

Julie's second book, Cleaving, documents another food-related adventure. Here Julie decides to learn the art of butchery - not the factory-based, mass-production kind but the dangerous skills of traditional butchers who work with their hands, aided by a scarily (at least to me) sharp arsenal of knives. In more ways than one, this book is quite different than Julie & Julia. Darker, more serious, grown up, and cutting deeper - pun intended. Cleaving is also a natural continuation of Julie Powell's debut. Julie's writing is still funny, smart, and entertaining but is also harder to stomach - especially the complicated affair that threatens to destroy her marriage and the detailed descriptions of cutting meat. I appreciated her honesty and fearlessness in depicting both. The art of cleaving - with all its very literal and concrete imagery - becomes a metaphor of sorts for Julie Powell. Cleaving is the means to dissecting her life and emotions, the journey of taking it all apart to make a new whole. And while I did not care particularly for the cleaving meat sequences, I liked Julie's more mature writing style.

I enjoyed reading - or rather listening, since I have the audio book version - about Julie's trips abroad. However, the book could have easily done without them - and they came more as an afterthought that did not feel like a real part of the book. Sure, putting some geographical distance - as well as emotional - between her and New York life helps Julie find her peace. But the description of these trips was short and lacking the detail of Julie's foray into butchery. For me, this part of the book makes it uneven, as Julie hurries through the depiction of her travels.

If you loved Julie & Julia, Cleaving may disappoint you - Julie has changed, and her second memoir lacks the lightheartedness of the first. Then again, we all grow up.

Disclaimer: I received a complimentary audio book copy of this book without any obligation to write a positive review. The opinions expressed in this post are mine and may differ from yours.  Many thanks to Hachette Book Group for providing me with a review copy.

Kashmiri Chai from Golden Moon Tea: Review

Monday, February 08, 2010 Posted by Dina

A few weeks ago, I gave my readers a sneak peak about my forthcoming review of Golden Moon Tea. I am happy to report that I have since received my Kashmiri Chai sample, and am enjoying every sip! In cold weather, there is something special about relaxing with a hot cup of good tea. I love to snuggle up with a good book, or just sit down and take a few minutes off my busy day after I've brewed a cup or two.

The Kashmiri Chai lived up to my expectations. It comes from the Himalayas of Northern India. This is a loose leaf tea, and I made it according to the instructions on the box. Making loose leaf tea takes more time and deliberation than simply dunking a baggie in a cup of hot water. I enjoyed the ritual of preparing the tea - even following every required step is somehow calming. The Kashmiri Chai is very aromatic, with an exotic spice flavor that I loved. I tried it with some milk and honey, and it tasted delicious. After the first brewing, I found I liked it a little stronger, so the next time I gave it a couple more minutes for a more intense flavor.

If you are a tea aficionado, check out the Kashmiri Chai from Golden Moon Tea!

Win New Glasses from GlassesUSA: Review and Giveaway - Plus a Discount (Ends 2/21) CLOSED

Sunday, February 07, 2010 Posted by Dina

I have been wearing eyeglasses longer than I care to remember. And while I do not need them all the time - mostly when driving at night, watching TV, or working at the computer - having a good pair makes all the difference between comfort and a bad eye strain, or even a tension headache.

A decent pair of prescription glasses can cost you quite a bit. Last week, my friend Sara went shopping for new glasses, and I tagged along. Without her vision insurance, she would have had to pay close to $200 for frames alone! Add to that an eye exam and various coatings for the lenses - and your new glasses become a major expense.

Prescription glasses do not have to be such a significant investment. Recently, I came across GlassesUSA, an online retailer of prescription glasses, eyewear and eyeglass frames. GlassesUSA offer a nice selection of frames and you can order a pair of prescription glasses to be delivered to your door at very affordable prices.

I chose the Earth frames - a pair of black titanium frames that are oval in shape and would go well with most facial shapes. I received my glasses in about 10 days. They arrived securely packaged - a concern anytime you order breakables via mail delivery. The glasses came with a nice black case that included a cleaning cloth. My first impression was how stylish these glasses looked. The Earth frames are also very light and comfortable to wear. The prescription was an exact match, and the glasses fit me perfectly. Titanium is more durable than most materials used to make eyewear, and my frames seem able to withstand years of use. At $69.95 - including lenses - the Earth are a fashionable yet affordable option, comparable to many designer frames I've seen.

There are many other frames to choose from - full, semi-rimless, rimless, and classic models. Prices start at just $18 for a complete pair of single-vision glasses. GlassesUSA deliver worldwide, and shipping and handling starts at $8.95 for the U.S., Canada or the U.K.

Deal Alert
Use promo code Mommy5 for a 5% discount off your order at GlassesUSA!

The Giveaway
One lucky reader will win a pair of single-vision glasses of their choice from GlassesUSA! You can pick any frame and choose between reading and distance lenses.

To enter, please comment below who in your life could use a pair of new prescription glasses.

For extra entries, feel free to do any or all of the following:
  • follow me on twitter and tweet about this giveaway – you can do this once a day, feel free to copy and paste: "Win a free pair of prescription glasses from GlassesUSA! #Giveaway ends 2/21 @aitmama @GlassesUSA #win http://tinyurl.com/yzuvlw4";
  • follow GlassesUSA on twitter;
  • go here for additional ways to get extra entries.
The deadline to enter is February 21, 2010, 11:59pm EST. A winner will be randomly selected and notified by e-mail. They will have 72 hours to get back to me, or an alternate winner will be chosen. Open to those with mailing addresses in the U.S. or Canada. The winner will receive their prize directly from the sponsor.

Oxygen Bleach from Tropical Traditions: Review and Giveaway (Ends 2/17) CLOSED

Sunday, February 07, 2010 Posted by Dina

Tropical Traditions, the company that makes great coconut oil and a variety of delicious organic food products, has a line of non-toxic cleaners, as well! Their home goods are marketed under the name Household Traditions, and include an oxygen bleach that I had the opportunity to try out.

I have to admit - while I've used chlorine bleach occasionally in the past, I was never a big fan. The smell of chlorine makes me gag, and as a rule, I avoid using products that are toxic to people and bad for the environment. I was excited to find out that Tropical Traditions Oxygen Bleach is a safe and effective alternative to chlorine based products. It is based on sodium percarbonate which uses oxygen for destaining and deodorizing. Oxygen bleach has many uses around the house - in the laundry room, bathroom, kitchen, and yard.

Tropical Traditions Oxygen Bleach is a powder that comes in a 6 lbs. container. There is a handy measuring scoop that allows me to use exactly the amount I need.

First, I tried Tropical Traditions Oxygen Bleach to get rid of some stains on clothing. It worked equally well on whites and colors. And it left the clothes smelling clean and fresh, not of chlorine - a huge plus for me. No risk of damaging my clothes, either!

Next, I cleaned and deodorized the toilets with a scoop and a half (3 ounces) and the bathrooms with a paste made of oxygen bleach and water. Again, I got excellent results - without the chlorine smell. And I don't have to worry about the effect of oxygen bleach on my family and on the planet - it's non-toxic and compatible with other household cleaners.

There are many other ways to use this wonderful product, and I encourage you to read about them here. Personally, I know I'll never go back to chlorine bleach again.

Deal Alert
Right now, Tropical Traditions Oxygen Bleach is on sale at $23.99 for a 6 lb. container! That's 20% discount off the regular retail price of $30. It's worth every penny.

If you decide to buy this product or anything else from Tropical Traditions, as a first-time customer you can get a FREE Virgin Coconut Oil book with purchase. Find out all about coconut oil and its uses! Just use code 5251001 in the Referred by a Friend section and the book will be added to your order at no charge.

The Giveaway
Tropical Traditions are generously giving away a 6 lb. container of Oxygen Bleach to a lucky reader of this blog!

To enter, please take a look at the Tropical Traditions product line and tell me what interests you the most.

For extra entries, feel free to do any or all of the following:
  • subscribe to Tropical Traditions' newsletter - you'll know all about their specials, sales and promotions - and get 2 entries;
  • check out the free coconut recipes here and tell me which one you'd like to try;
  • follow me on twitter and tweet about this giveaway – you can do this once a day, feel free to copy and paste: "Win Tropical Traditions' non-toxic oxygen bleach 6 lbs! #eco #giveaway ends 2/17 @troptraditions @aitmama #win http://tinyurl.com/ygbbx8q";
  • follow Tropical Traditions on twitter;
  • go here for additional ways to get extra entries.
The deadline to enter is February 17, 2010, 11:59pm EST. A winner will be randomly selected and notified by e-mail. They will have 72 hours to get back to me, or an alternate will be chosen. Open to those with mailing addresses in the U.S. or Canada. The winner will receive their prize directly from the sponsor.

Book Description
Lore is a Seminus half-breed demon who has been forced to act as his dark master's assassin. Now to earn his freedom and save his sister's life, he must complete one last kill. Powerful and ruthless, he'll stop at nothing to carry out this deadly mission.

Idess is an earthbound angel with a wild side, sworn to protect the human Lore is targeting. She's determined to thwart her wickedly handsome adversary by any means necessary-even if that means risking her vow of eternal chastity. But what begins as a simple seduction soon turns into a passion that leaves both angel and demon craving complete surrender.

Torn between duty and desire, Lore and Idess must join forces as they battle their attraction for each other. Because an enemy from the past is rising again-one hellbent on vengeance and unthinkable destruction.

Book Blog Tour: Searching for Tina Turner by Jacqueline E. Luckett

Monday, February 01, 2010 Posted by Dina

Book Description
On the surface, Lena Spencer appears to have it all. She and her wealthy husband Randall have two wonderful children, and they live a life of luxury. In reality, however, Lena finds that happiness is elusive. Randall is emotionally distant, her son has developed a drug habit, and her daughter is disgusted by her mother's "overbearing behavior." When Randall decides that he's had enough of marriage counseling, he offers his wife an ultimatum: "Be grateful for all I've done for you or leave." Lena, realizing that money can't solve her problems and that her husband is no longer the man she married, decides to choose the latter.
