Johnson’s Big Bubblin’ Stars Contest

Tuesday, June 29, 2010 Posted by Dina

I just found out about a fun contest called Johnson’s Big Bubblin’ Stars Contest. From June 1 – July 6, submissions are accepted at the Johnson’s Baby YouTube Channel.

To enter, parents with kids aged 6 months to 4 years need to shoot an under 3-minute bath time fun video and upload it to the channel. Approved videos will be featured on the Johnson's YouTube channel and after the submission period ends, a panel of judges will pick the top nine finalists. Then site visitors will vote to choose the winners.

For every video submitted, Johnson's Baby will make a donation to March of Dimes. One Grand Prize winner will be awarded $10,000. The first place winner will receive $3,000, and one second place winner will win $1,000. In addition to that, the top nine finalists will receive a special prize pack with Johnson’s products and Crayola Beginnings Tadoodles in the Tub toys.

And now if you'll excuse me, camcorder duty calls.

My Dream Bathroom Sink

Tuesday, June 29, 2010 Posted by Dina

One of the reasons I fell in love with my house at first sight was the master bathroom. It is spacious, light and airy. I love the garden tub, the light fixtures, the double vanity, the walk-in shower. After a few years of daily use, things do start to show a bit of wear and tear. I am planning a bit of remodeling, and will start with the bathroom sink.

CSN Stores have a wide variety of sinks that I would love to see in my bathroom. The innovative design of the Avanity sink would make such a statement! Or the Kraus Glass Sink Combinations Clear Vessel and Waterfall Faucet. Gorgeous!

How about the clean elegance of the Swanstone Metropolitan 37" Contour Vanity Top? Waking up to wash my face and freshen up at this beauty would be a real treat.

So many choices, and just one bathroom! Hmmm, maybe I should start thinking about the other sinks around the house...

Disclaimer / Disclosure: I will receive a voucher from CSN Stores to use toward an item of my choice for review. Stay tuned for the review post in the coming weeks.

Shampoo Bar from Tropical Traditions: Review and Giveaway (Ends 7/12) CLOSED

Monday, June 28, 2010 Posted by Dina

I love the coconut oil soaps from Tropical Traditions. The shampoo bar has been on my list of things to try for ages! Now finally my hair can enjoy the same pampering treatment that my skin has been getting with their liquid and bar soaps.

Just as the other Tropical Traditions natural soaps, the Shampoo Bar is made from saponified organic virgin coconut oil. The bar also contains natural patchouli. Nothing else! It is handmade in the Philippines. The shampoo bar makes a rich lather and my hair feels so soft and fragrant after I use it. My bathroom now smells lightly of patchouli - such a lovely scent.

I was intrigued by one of the customer testimonials on the Tropical Traditions site.  She said she'd been using the shampoo bar for about 4 months and her hair color did not fade at all. Now I have not used the shampoo bar that long but if it works the same way for me, it's worth its weight in gold - er, hair color and trips to the hair salon.

And I just have to mention that not having another plastic shampoo bottle in my shower makes my green self happy.

Deal Alert
Right now, the shampoo bar is on sale for $4.95! Its regular price is $6.95. If at any time you decide to buy this product or anything else from Tropical Traditions, as a first-time customer you can get a FREE Virgin Coconut Oil book with purchase. Find out all about coconut oil and its uses! Just use code 5251001 in the Referred by a Friend section and the book will be added to your order at no charge.

Win a Shredder: Fellowes P-8C Giveaway (Ends 7/25) CLOSED

Friday, June 25, 2010 Posted by Dina

Remember the Fellowes P-8C paper shredder I reviewed earlier this month? In case you missed my post, here are some highlights. This is a cross-cut, desk side compact shredder that easily fits into smaller spaces. The P-8C provides maximum security by reducing paper documents into more than 300 particles per sheet and destroys credit cards, paper clips and staples without jamming. A patented Safety Lock disables the shredder for added safety protection.

Now you can win a Fellowes P-8C paper shredder of your own!

To enter, please read my review and comment below what feature appeals to you the most.

For extra entries, feel free to do any or all of the following:

Guest Post: Healthy Summer Bbqs and Low-Calorie Cocktails

Thursday, June 24, 2010 Posted by Dina

Today, I am pleased to welcome Mary Hartley, RD, MPH, Director of Nutrition at Calorie Count. Mary has graciously agreed to share some healthy recipes and tips, just in time for barbeque season!

Ho-hum.  Burgers, dogs, and steaks, with their load of calories and saturated fat.  Let’s take summer to a new, healthy level by grilling and drinking in a different way.  Fewer than 40 percent of Americans eating three to four more servings of produce a day (when they need five to nine).  For health’s sake, they need to sneak those fresh fruits and vegetables onto the grill and into the summer cocktails.

Crisp tender grilled vegetables are simply tastier, and distinctive …those grill marks scream summer.  They’re part of the décor. And who can refuse an icy fruity drink straight from the blender?  This is so not winter!

The featured recipes, all contributed by Calorie Count Members to our humongous recipe database, are fun to cook and eat and, most important, they are low calorie and highly nutritious.  Notice that Calorie Count supplies a Nutrition Facts label for one serving of the recipe.  Use Calorie Count, to analyze your recipes, create an online cookbook, and share your recipes on Facebook with your friends.  Several of these recipes are included on Calorie Count’s new (free) iPhone App.  Calorie Count also gives a ‘Nutrition Grade’  to recipes, and many of these recipes rate an ‘A’.  Okay, cocktails never get an ‘A’ because alcohol has empty calories. But these recipes are all good for you and so fire up the grill and let the summer begin.

Grilled Recipes:

Cocktail Recipes:
Warning:  The yummy fruit hides the alcohol, but it’s there.  Drink s l o w l y.

Book Blog Tour: Secret Lives of Husbands and Wives by Josie Brown

Tuesday, June 22, 2010 Posted by Dina

Book Description
SECRET LIVES OF HUSBANDS AND WIVES by Josie Brown is Tom Perrotta's Little Children meets "Desperate Housewives." In this smart, funny story, a stay-at-home mom befriends a former Master of the Universe turned stay-at-home dad, until the neighborhood's mean mommies vying to make him the next notch on their bedposts turn on her, revealing the cruel side of suburbia.

My Review
Secret Lives of Husbands and Wives is funny, moving, and more realistic than the Desperate Housewives drama it's being compared to. I quite enjoyed the story. Lyssa, the main character, is likable and compassionate - a stark contrast with the mean girls-turned-mommies in their upscale neighborhood. She takes abandoned dad Harry under her wing, and the two become friends. From the start, it seemed to me there would be more to their relationship than meets the eye. There are a few surprises along the way, and things find a way to fall into place at the end.

Disclosure / Disclaimer: No monetary compensation was provided for this post. I received a complimentary copy of the book. The opinions expressed in this review are my own and may differ from yours. Book information courtesy of Simon & Schuster.

Audio Book Giveaway: Men and Dogs by Katie Crouch (Ends 7/11) CLOSED

Sunday, June 20, 2010 Posted by Dina

Last year, I had the pleasure to read Katie Crouch's first novel, Girls in Trucks. I was excited to hear that this remarkable debut is now followed by another book - Men and Dogs.

Book Description
In April of 1985, Buzz Legare went fishing. The next day all that was found was his boat and his waiting, faithful dog.

Twenty years later, his daughter Hannah still finds hope in believing, alone among her family, that he's still alive somewhere. She has a smart husband, a thriving business, a beautiful home in San Francisco-and a huge hole in her troubled heart. True to her trademark talent for self-sabotage, she finds herself one starry night climbing up the fire escape in a desperate (and drunken) attempt to win back her own husband--and failing disastrously.

Slightly worse for the wear, Hannah returns to Charleston to salve her wounds. There, old loves, unrepented crimes, and family legends are stirred up from the dust. Hannah's brother Palmer, the stoic with a secret of his own, cannot dissuade her from a manic search to uncover clues to the past, and they will both face shocking discoveries that lead them to reconcile their very different notions of loyalty and blind faith.

As she did so memorably in her bestselling debut, Girls in Trucks, Katie Crouch has created another great voice--spiky, tender, and hilarious--in the screwball heroine Hannah Legare. Much like Julia Roberts in My Best Friend's Wedding, Hannah follows the misguided impulses of a heart that's in the right place.

The Giveaway
Thanks to publisher Hachette Book Group, I am hosting a giveaway for three (3) audio book copies of Men and Dogs by Katie Crouch!

To enter, please comment below what's the last good book you've read.

  • go here for additional ways to get extra entries.
The deadline to enter is July 11, 2010, 11:59pm EST. Three winners will be randomly selected and notified by e-mail. They will have 72 hours to get back to me, or alternates will be chosen. Subject to this site's Official Rules.

Open to residents 18+ of U.S. and Canada only. No P.O. box addresses, please. One book per person. Winners will receive their prizes directly from Hachette Book Group. Book information and image courtesy of the publisher. No compensation was provided for this post.

Powermat the Super Charger: Review and Giveaway (Ends 7/11) CLOSED

Saturday, June 19, 2010 Posted by Dina

Cell phones, cameras, MP3 players, Bluetooth headsets, digital readers. All these devices are indispensable for many of us. And they all come with their own charger, complete with a mess of wires. I keep our chargers in a kitchen drawer, and as much as I try to arrange them neatly, a tangled heap of wires is often unavoidable. Oh, and it gets even more fun when we go on a trip. Did I remember to bring the chargers for the cameras, camcorder, cell phones? Because you know, all of these fab devices we can't live without are basically useless if we leave the chargers behind.

The Powermat sets you free from the necessity to tote around a multitude of chargers for your portable devices. It's a simple yet genius idea - a mat and adapters that charge without the constant plugging and unplugging, thanks to a series of tips that fit a multitude of devices. The Powermat system consists of a mat that you plug in - basically, the base on which you arrange your devices, and Powermat receivers to place on the devices. Then you simply place your cell phone, camera, and so on on the mat. It's magnetic, so the device stays put and does not slide off. The receivers are stored conveniently in a sleek little box. The whole system is elegant and slim, takes no space at all. It's just the perfect gift for any road warrior, tech geek, or even a person who owns just a cell phone and a digital camera. Even for people who seem to have everything and are oh so hard to shop for! No more tangle of wires and stressing out about remembering the chargers.

The Giveaway
One lucky reader will win a Powermat system of their own!

To enter, please comment below how you'd use the Powermat if you won. Would you keep it at home? At the office? Bring along on business trips? On vacation? Do share!

For extra entries, feel free to do any or all of the following:
  • follow me on twitter and tweet about this giveaway – you can do this once a day, feel free to copy and paste: "Win a Powermat system to charge your handheld devices with ease! #Giveaway ends 7/11 @aitmama @Powermat #win #contests http://tiny.cc/6zr1x";

Beautiful Silver Jewelry from Jewels of Denial: Review and Giveaway (Ends 7/18) CLOSED

Thursday, June 17, 2010 Posted by Dina

I love beautiful jewelry, and rings and earrings are at the top of my list. For spring and summer, I like colorful pieces that match my sunny mood. I just received this beautiful enamel  flower ring from one of the Internet's high quality sterling silver merchants - Jewels of Denial.

The ring came tastefully packaged in a drawstring jewelry bag. It is a wonderful shade of royal blue and has three white half-flowers with five gentle petals each. Oh, and if you turn it around to position the flower petals on the bottom, you have a simple, elegant blue enamel band! The ring is made of high quality silver and is available in full sizes from 5 to 10. I suggest using the handy ring sizer when ordering. But even if you don't get the size right - it happens to me sometimes - Jewels of Denial has a liberal 90-day return/exchange policy, and you can easily replace your piece for the one in the correct size. They ship to the U.S., Canada, and Australia.

The ring can be worn individually or stacked with other rings - including the silver enamel rings that Jewels of Denial offers in other colors, such as red and black. Personally, I wear it on my right hand, and pair it up with silver or white gold bracelets and earrings.

Speaking of earrings, Jewels of Denial also sent me the cutest pair of silver earrings. The Bali Hoop Earrings in Sterling Silver are simple and elegant, and would go with just about any piece of silver or white gold jewelry I own. Each earring has a polished bead center surrounded by an oxidized band pattern similar to the popular Greek Key - except it's in the Bali style.

The Giveaway
Now YOU can win your choice of any enamel ring from Jewels of Denial!

To enter, please browse their store and comment below with your favorite piece of jewelry.

For extra entries, feel free to do any or all of the following:
  • follow me on twitter and tweet about this giveaway – you can do this once a day, feel free to copy and paste: "Win a beautiful silver enamel ring from Jewels of Denial! #Giveaway ends 7/18 @aitmama @JewelsOfDenial #win #contests http://tiny.cc/a9n0i";
  • follow Jewels of Denial on twitter
  • sign up for their email newsletter - see the top of their left sidebar;
  • go here for additional ways to get extra entries.

Twitter Chat with Nia Vardalos for National Foster Care Month

Wednesday, June 16, 2010 Posted by Dina

I am a big fan of Nia Vardalos, and was delighted to find out that she is participating in a Twitter chat next week in honor of National Foster Care Month. Here is the scoop about the event that I received from the Global Influence Network:

Please join us for a very special Twitter event with actress, screenwriter, and motion picture director Nia Vardalos!  She is also an adoptive mother.

On Wednesday, June 23rd at 1 pm Eastern (10 am Pacific time)we will welcome  adoptive mom Nia Vardalos (@NiaVardalos) as she joins us for our next #AdoptUsKids Twitter chat about the importance of foster care and fostering to adopt.

Academy Award and Golden Globe nominated writer and actress, Nia Vardalos, of My Big Fat Greek Wedding, and her husband Ian adopted a little girl from the United States foster care system in 2008.  When Nia began the fostering process, she did not know if she would be able to adopt her foster daughter.  But when she moved forward with the adoption, she was surprised to find that the process was not as difficult as she anticipated - now she's here to help others learn about the fostering/fostering to adopt process!

Not only will Nia be sharing her experiences and answering questions, but experts from AdoptUsKids will also be available to answer your questions about foster care and adoption.  AdoptUsKids works to increase public awareness about the urgent need for foster and adoptive families for children in foster care. They also support States, Territories and Tribes in their efforts to recruit and retain foster and adoptive families and connect them with children in foster care.  AdoptUsKids is a project of the Children's Bureau of the Administration of Children and Families, U.S. Dept of Health and Human Services.

To learn more about adoption from foster care and how you can help spread the word about children in care waiting for forever families, please visit www.AdoptUsKids.org. To find children in your area, visit AdoptUsKids Child Search.

Again, please join us Wednesday, June 23rd from 1-2pm Eastern (10-11 am Pacific time)on Twitter.  To participate, please follow @AdoptUsKids, @ResourcefulMom, and @NiaVardalos, and use the hashtag #AdoptUsKids. Facebook users may also wish to become a fan of AdoptUsKids at http://www.facebook.com/AdoptUsKids.

* Disclaimer / Disclosure: I am helping raise awareness about this important issue via my involvement with Global Influence Network. No compensation of any kind was provided for my participation but I am being entered into a drawing for a gift card.

Book Description
An expert in antiquities, Lady Alessandra della Giamatti arrives in Bath to excavate newly discovered Roman ruins-only to find herself caught in a web of evil intrigue by a blackmailer threatening to expose her scandalous past. The one man who can help her is Lord James "Black Jack" Pierson, a fellow member of the expedition and a sinfully handsome rogue whose tempting presence ignites a different sort of danger.

Jack has clashed with Alessandra in the past, so when she suddenly surrenders her body he can't help being suspicious. Is she a scheming temptress? Or is she truly a lady in trouble? As desire and deceptions swirl around them, Alessandra and Jack must find a way to win each other's trust. Homemade Popcorn - My Favorite Snack

Sunday, June 13, 2010 Posted by Dina

I love going to the movies. Apart from the actual movie, my next favorite thing about them is the popcorn. Good movie popcorn is the ultimate fast food for me. My husband and I used to never miss a good movie premiere, and popcorn was a must.

Having young kids has put a serious dent in my movie-going routine. In addition, now that we don't get to the movies much, the prices of movie tickets seem to go up every time we do go. Enter movie nights at home with a DVD rental - and, of course, popcorn. We used to eat the microwave kind but now I am the proud owner of a stainless-steel stove top popcorn popper!

There is no comparing microwave popcorn to the freshly popped goodness that comes out of my popper. The taste, the smell, everything is superior. Zero risk to crack a tooth on an unpopped kernel because all kernels pop. I can avoid the conventional corn grown with pesticides and use organic. I can control the amount of salt and oil we use. Finally, I can choose what oil to put in the popper - my favorite is the organic virgin coconut oil.

Homemade popcorn is cheaper than single-serve microwave packages - even if I buy them in bulk. It is healthier because I can pop it with almost no oil or salt - if I want to do that. I usually put a tablespoon of healthy oil, and leave the seasoning for after the popcorn is ready.

And did I mention all the packaging saved from going into a landfill? We buy large containers of corn kernels - and coconut oil - that are recycled after use. Win-win for my family and for the environment!

Now if you'll excuse me, my magical popper awaits...

Disclosure / Disclaimer: The only reason to write this post is my love for good popcorn.

Organic Insect Repellent from Tropical Traditions: Review and Giveaway (Ends 6/27) CLOSED

Sunday, June 13, 2010 Posted by Dina

Spring and summer are my favorite seasons. I love the sun, the intense blue of the sky, and the fruits and veggies that come along. The one thing I dislike is the mosquito invasion. And those little critters just love me!

A good insect repellent is an absolute must for my family. Preferably an organic one that is not loaded with questionable chemicals. Tropical Traditions makes an all natural organic insect repellent using their fabulous organic virgin coconut oil. The other ingredients include organic jojoba, plant based emulsifying wax, grapefruit seed extract, virgin palm oil, and organic essential oils of citronella, catnip, lemongrass, peppermint, and tansy.

This product is a lotion that you apply on the skin as needed. Since it contains no chemicals, I used it on my kids as well as on myself. Once on the skin, the lotion has a pleasant lemony-grassy scent. It can be safely used on the face, as well. I learned from the Tropical Traditions site that coconut oil has been used to ward off insects in tropical climates for hundreds of years. I already knew that essential oils are known to repel insects, as well. I found the combination of coconut oil and essential oils to be very effective in preventing mosquitoes from feasting on my family during a recent cookout. I noticed it also doubled as a moisturizer!

Deal Alert
Right now, a 4 oz bottle of Tropical Traditions Organic Insect Repellent is buy one get one free - hurry, this promo ends at midnight today, June 13!

Juice Beauty: Review and Giveaway (Ends 7/4) CLOSED

Sunday, June 13, 2010 Posted by Dina

Juice Beauty is a California based company that aims to provide authentically organic beauty products for skin and hair. Their products are made without parabens, petroleum, propylene or butylene glycol, sodium lauryl sulfates, pesticides, phthalates, artificial dyes or synthetic fragrances. Rather than using water as a base, Juice Beauty products have a 100% certified organic juice base.

I tried the Green Apple Peel Sensitive. My first impression when I opened the sample was how much it resembled pureed apples. The scent was fruity and very pleasant. The peel is made with certified organic ingredients. It uses a refining alpha hydroxy acid complex of certified organic apple, lemon, grape juices, and raw cane sugar. I have very sensitive skin and was a little apprehensive about trying the peel. Juice Beauty recommends testing the product on a small area behind the ear to make sure no irritation develops. I skipped this step but when I applied the peel, I watched my face carefully for any signs of irritation. There were none, and after the requisite 10 minutes, I washed off the peel. My face looked refreshed and clear, as if I had just had a spa facial! There was a small reddish area on the side of my face that faded within minutes. I followed with a nice nourishing face cream. My skin felt rejuvenated and my face looked rested, as if I had just come back from a relaxing vacation. And all that in a few minutes.

The Green Apple Peel Sensitive is appropriate for combination and blemished / oily skin. A slight tingling sensation is to be expected, and Juice Beauty recommends making the peel a part of your beauty regimen once a week.

The Giveaway
One lucky reader will win a jar of Green Apple Peel Sensitive  - a $39 value!

To enter, please check out the Juice Beauty product selection and comment below with another product you'd like to try.

Gifts for Father's Day and Every Day: Gillette Fusion ProGlide Review and Giveaway (Ends 7/4) CLOSED

Saturday, June 12, 2010 Posted by Dina

My husband hates shaving. He would not if he should not, so to speak. When he does shave, however, Gillette is his preferred brand. He got to try the newest addition to their extensive shaving line - the Gillette Fusion ProGlide razor.

Gillette was the first company to introduce a two-blade razor back in 1971. The Gillette Fusion ProGlide does not boast additional blades but focuses on providing a more comfortable shave. New features include blades that are 15% thinner to tug skin less, a better grip and new mineral-oil lubrication.

Now I am not an expert in men's shaving products but hubby says he loves the new razor. That's good enough for me.

The Gillette Fusion ProGlide razor is already available in stores, and you can get one for Father's Day - or just because - to give to the man in your life.

The Giveaway
Three (3) readers will win the new Gillette Fusion ProGlide razor!

To enter, please share who would get the Gillette Fusion ProGlide razor if you win.

For extra entries, feel free to do any or all of the following:
  • follow me on twitter and tweet about this giveaway – you can do this once a day, feel free to copy and paste: "Win 1 of 3 of the new Gillette Fusion ProGlide razors! Comfy shave for guys #Giveaway ends 7/4 @aitmama #win #contests http://tiny.cc/mcvdz";
  • go here for additional ways to get extra entries.

The Art of Snacking: Ritz Crackerfuls

Friday, June 11, 2010 Posted by Dina

At my house, healthy eating in general and healthy snacking in particular takes a bit of effort, creativity, and preparation. Given a choice, my kids would not pick veggies over cookies, or nuts over chips. So I have to help things along a little and steer them towards healthy snacks that are fun to eat.

I always have apples on the counter, veggies in the fridge, and something to dip in. We love apple slices with peanut butter and baby carrots with hummus. Things are a bit trickier on the go. My kids have eaten many pounds of Cheerios in the car, park, and zoo. I discovered Ritz Crackerfuls a few months ago when looking for a school snack for my daughter. She loves the Classic Cheddar, and we were excited to try the new Cheddar Cheese & Bacon.

The Ritz Crackerfuls come in four varieties: Garlic Herb, Four Cheese, Classic Cheddar and the newest Cheddar Cheese & Bacon. Each cracker is like a little sandwich with cheese filling, and comes packaged individually - just the right size for a quick snack. The Crackerfuls are made with 6 grams of whole grains and real cheese, and easily bridge that gap between breakfast and lunch, or lunch and dinner.

The new Cheddar Cheese & Bacon have a more grown up taste than the Classic Cheddar. While personally I like them better, my kids always vote for just cheddar.

Whether or not you've already tried these tasty crackers, go join their Facebook page and get a coupon for $1 off Cheddar Cheese & Bacon Crackerfuls. The coupon offer is good through August 31, 2010 or up to just over 33k coupon prints.

Disclaimer / Disclosure: I am participating in this campaign thanks to my involvement with the One2One Network. I received free product samples and by posting become eligible to win a gift card via random drawing. No other compensation was obtained.

Infiniti by Conair You Curl: Review and Giveaway (Ends 7/10) CLOSED

Friday, June 11, 2010 Posted by Dina

I never cared much for curling irons. The heat, the effort - somehow was not worth my time. I am happy to say that my hair has finally found its match! I never thought I'd say this about a curling iron but the Infiniti by Conair You Curl is a thing of beauty.

The You Curl is a tourmaline ceramic styler in a strikingly elegant red, with a stainless steel finish. The unique, clamp-free design and a cone-shaped barrel create soft, less structured curls that I love. No more clamping down on my hair! All you do is just wrap some strands around the barrel, hold for a few seconds and then release. Voila - curls!

The Infiniti by Conair You Curl features Tourmaline Ceramic™ technology that provides reduces frizz, helps eliminate static and does not have damaging hot spots. It took me a few tries to get the hang of it but then my hair seemed to just hug the You Curl, and beautiful curls started cascading down, framing my face. My daughter said, "Mommy, your hair is SO beautiful!" And I agree - it's been ages since I've seen such pretty curls in the mirror.

The conical design allows the curls to start closer to the root, giving more volume through the middle (large portion of the barrel) and a tighter curl on the bottom (small section of the barrel). The You Curl is ready to use in just 30 seconds, and has a handy little light display that indicates the temperature. There are 5 LED settings providing the ideal temperatures for all hair types. There is a nice little button with a +/- for increasing / decreasing the temperature. I love that the line cord swivels, allowing free, unrestricted movement while you work on the curls. In addition, the tip of the iron stays cool and protects fingers during use.

And finally, if you are not convinced that the You Curl is my dream curling wand, here is the last thing I love about it. If I forget to turn it off, it will not set the house on fire: the You Curl shuts itself off automatically within 60 minutes.

The Giveaway
Having curl envy yet? You can find the product at retailers, or online. Also you can enter to win your own Infiniti by Conair You Curl right here!

To enter, please comment below how you take care of your hair.

Gifts for Father's Day and Everyday: Organix-South Review and Giveaway (Ends 7/10) CLOSED

Friday, June 11, 2010 Posted by Dina

Guys deserve some pampering, too! Especially now that Father's Day is just around the corner. My husband got an early gift this year when he tried two new products from Organix-South.

We received the Theraneem Organix Oatmeal & Lavender Neem Therapé Cleansing Bar and the Theraneem Organix Men’s Lotion. My first impression when I opened the box was how wonderful they smelled. The soap is scented with lavender and oatmeal, but still has a masculine aroma. The lotion has a pleasant woodsy scent. Both products are paraben, sulfate and gluten-free. The baris handcrafted and contains olive, coconut and palm oils. In addition, the soap has a minimum of 10% certified-organic Neem oil, a herb used for centuries to soothe skin. This soap is perfect for the entire body including the face. It is formulated for sensitive skin and packed with antioxidants.

The TheraNeem Men’s Lotion also contains Neem oil and can be used as a body lotion. My husband is not a body lotion guy and prefers to use it on his face after shaving. As much as he dislikes shaving, he seems more willing to do it when a nice pampering lotion is on the shelf! We both agree that these products make great gifts for Father's Day and every day.

The Giveaway
Would you like to have the man in your life try these products? One reader will get a set of soap and lotion from Organix-South!

To enter, please share how you pamper yourself, or the guy in your life.

For extra entries, feel free to do any or all of the following:
  • follow me on twitter and tweet about this giveaway – you can do this once a day, feel free to copy and paste: "Win a set of pampering Theraneem Organix men's lotion and soap bar! #Giveaway ends 7/10 @aitmama #win #contests http://tiny.cc/885lw";

Fellowes P-8C Paper Shredder: Review

Thursday, June 10, 2010 Posted by Dina

According to a recent 2010 Identity Fraud Survey Report conducted by Javelin Strategy and Research, identity theft impacted 11.1 million Americans last year, an increase of 12 percent from 2008. And while there isn't much you can do about it when your personal information leaks from your credit company's files, for example, there are steps you can take to minimize other risks.

One of the things I do is check out my credit report regularly. The thing is, once something irregular shows up there, your personal information is already in the wrong hands. So, an ounce of prevention: shred paperwork that includes important personal details, such as your social security number, credit card numbers, and checking account information.

I go a step further and shred credit card offers, old credit cards, store receipts, anything that can be of any use to an identity thief. It's important to have a decent shredder at home, so that I am not tempted to toss any sensitive paperwork in the recycling bin. Well, I do recycle it - AFTER I shred it.

I recently tried the new Fellowes P-8C deskside paper shredder. This compact little thing fits easily under the desk in my home office. I can even hide it in a filing cabinet, if I want. It's a cross-cut shredder that reduces paper documents into more than 300 particles per sheet and destroys credit cards, paper clips and staples without jamming.  Since I have kids at home, one of my favorite features is the patented Safety Lock that disables the shredder for added safety. All you have to do is push down and slide it to lock after you are done with the shredding. I also like it that the on / off switch is on the back - easy to get to yet hidden from little eyes and fingers.

The shredder is intended for home use, and takes up to 8 sheets of regular paper at a time. One of the most important things to ensure smooth operation is to never feed into the machine more that the maximum number of sheets. I usually don't feel like counting, so I shred 3-5 at a time. If a sheet of paper is folded, it counts as more than one, of course - fold it in 4, then it's four times thicker. It's good to remember this if you are shredding mail without opening the envelope and unfolding its content. The slot for paper is pretty narrow - another good feature. If you are trying to insert too much paper at the same time, it simply won't fit. If you do manage to push it in and it does get stuck, the handy reverse button helps to get the paper out.

There is an indicator light that turns green when the shredder is in auto-on mode - that is, will start shredding as soon as it detects paper in the slot. When the machine overheats, another LED light turns red. The shredder can be used continuously for up to 5 minutes. If you try to use it longer than that, a cool down  period of 15 minutes is triggered. For this reason, it is a good idea to avoid building a to-shred pile - just shred as you open your mail, for instance. That helps keep clutter under control at my house, too.

The ability to shred old credit cards with the Fellowes P-8C is very useful to me. The machine shreds one card at a time, and it needs to go in the center of the opening - this spot is clearly marked on the shredder. I got rid of old bank cards, club membership cards, and insurance cards with ease.

Another important thing you can do to ensure your shredder works well is to maintain it well. Empty the bin when full, and oil the shredding mechanism each time you do so. The company recommends using a non-aerosol vegetable oil in a long nozzle container, such as the Fellowes 35250.

If you are looking for a compact shredder for home use, check of the Fellowes P-8C. It has a suggested retail value of $59.99 and is available at Target stores nationwide.

Disclosure / Disclaimer: I received a complimentary shredder to facilitate this review. The opinions are my own and others' experience may differ. No monetary compensation was provided for this post.

Music Review: The Essential Carole King

Tuesday, June 08, 2010 Posted by Dina

Album Description
As a singer, Carole King won over millions of fans with her honest portrayals of love and life. As a songwriter, she penned dozens of hits for others, many of which became American pop standards. Now for the first time, these two aspects of a long and celebrated career are combined, presenting the best of Carole King as both singer and songwriter. Together, these songs tell the complete story of an extraordinarily gifted and successful artist, who is still actively performing to this day, more than four decades later.

My Review
The Essential Carole King is a wonderful 2-CD set highlighting the best of this talented musician. The first CD includes 18 songs performed by Carole, including the Grammy®-winning songs It’s Too Late and You’ve Got A Friend, and collaborations with James Taylor, Celine Dion and Babyface. I was familiar with many of the songs but must admit I did not know Carole King was the one who wrote and performed them. Carole's expressive voice, beautiful vocals, and simple musical accompaniment make for a very pleasing musical experience. I enjoyed listening to every single song, and wished the disc included even more of Carole's performances. Some of my favorites are Child of Mine, I Feel the Earth Move, and You've Got a Friend. I found myself singing along, dancing around with my kids to the tune of this CD, or getting all sentimental on some of the slow pieces.

Disc 2 includes popular compositions of Carole King's performed by others, such as Up On The Roof (The Drifters), Natural Woman (Aretha Franklin), and Chains (The Beatles). The disc features 15 delightful songs. I love the selection - it's hard not to start dancing to The Loco-Motion, or sing (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman along with Aretha Franklin. I have to mention some of the other excellent songs such as Crying in the Rain (The Everly Brothers), Take Good Care of My Baby (Bobby Vee),  and Pleasant Valley Sunday (The Monkees).

If you are a fan of old classics that have set the standards for American pop music, you'll love this album. It would make a great Father's Day gift, too. See - and hear - the complete list of tracks here.

Disclosure / Disclaimer: I received a complimentary review copy of this CD courtesy of Sony Music. The opinions are my own. No monetary compensation was provided for this post.

Book Blog Tour: The Art of Devotion by Samantha Bruce-Benjamin

Tuesday, June 08, 2010 Posted by Dina

Book Description
THE ART OF DEVOTION by Samantha Bruce-Benjamin is a haunting debut novel in the tradition of Rebecca and Atonement. Filled with secrets, love, betrayal, obsession, and deceit, THE ART OF DEVOTION is a beautifully rendered window into one family’s dark and complex history. Told from the shifting points of view of four women, the story explores the psychological effects and emotional damage within a family led by a matriarch who was tragically widowed too soon; the fragile, almost inappropriately close relationship between her son and daughter; and the reckless deceit of an outsider. In a recent review, the Romantic Times called the writing “lyrical, reminscent of old gothic romances.”

My Review
This beautifully written book presents a surprising, darker look at love. The kind of love that may empower and exhilarate at first but also cause pain, suffering, and destruction. Love that is so powerful that it leaves death in its wake. The flip side of romance - lies, deceit, and betrayal. The resentment, the bitterness, the jealousy that we all hope will pass us by in life.

The story is revealed in bits and pieces, through the voices of four women - two mothers and two daughters. It's a puzzle that slowly comes to light, a kaleidoscope of images that shift and change. It reminded me of a Greek drama but set in the first half of the 20th century. These women are destined to love too much, and to find out that the enormity of their love is not enough to protect themselves or those they hold in their hearts. I would not attempt to recount the story because it should be read as it is written - a story of passion and devotion set against the beauty of an eternal ocean and an island paradise.

Book Description
The Legend Hunters . . .
The Men of Solomon's meet in secret, their very existence only a rumor among the best of Victorian society. They are treasure hunters, men of wealth and title, seekers of myths and legends. And no legend is as mystifying as the lost city of Atlantis . . .

Years ago, Maxwell Barrett found a map to Atlantis and dedicated his life to the search for the mystical lost continent. But when an alluring woman makes a wager for the priceless artifact, he may have discovered an even greater treasure.

A descendant of Atlantis, Sabine Tobias needs the map to decipher an ancient prophecy. What she doesn't need are the sparks flying between her and Max. Bath Trio Kit from Earth Baby: Review

Monday, June 07, 2010 Posted by Dina

Earth Baby offers a line of hypoallergenic baby care products with certified organic ingredients. Founded by Florence Nacino, a researcher, chemist, and mom, Earth Baby uses an award-winning technology to create products that cleanse, protect and nourish baby's hair and skin.

We received the Bath Trio Kit from Earth Baby including the Organic Tiny Bubble Shampoo, Organic Forget Me Knot Hair Detangler, and Organic Playfull Sudzz Bath Gel. Gotta love the names! The first thing I noticed was the pleasant scent and cute bottles. On the labels, there is a picture of the Tarsier monkey, a great way to raise awareness of this critically endangered species.

All three products contain ingredients that are 95% natural derived and 90% certified organic. In addition, they are free of parabens, preservatives and phthalates, without animal by-products and not tested on animals. First, we tried the shampoo and bath gel. The shampoo left my kids' hair silky, shiny and fragrant, and the bath gel was fun to use and gentle on their skin. Finally, the detangler worked wonders on my daughter's thick, long hair. It is used like a conditioner - apply on wet hair, massage, and rinse.

In case you are unsure how much to use, the labels on each product show the "serving size": one quarter-size drop for the shampoo and detangler, and two for the bath gel. The gel can also be used in lieu of shampoo.

Each of the three products retails at $15 and can be purchased at the Earth Baby online store.

Kimochis - Toys with Feelings: Review

Sunday, June 06, 2010 Posted by Dina

My kids are usually very good at expressing their feelings. We had no terrible twos (or threes), no embarrassing rolling-on-the-floor tantrums with kicking and screaming at the supermarket, no bursts of violence toward other children. I do realize that many families are not so lucky, and young children go through periods when expressing their emotions appropriately is a challenge. Hey, I've met adults who have trouble doing that.

Kimochis, a line of adorable plush toys, were created to assist in the development of social and emotional intelligence, child-parent communication and building self-esteem in children. Kimochi (KEY.MO.CHEE) means "feeling" in Japanese. Each Kimochi character comes with 3 plush "feelings" - a round little creatures that have an emotion written on one side and the corresponding facial expression drawn on the other. There is also a Feel Guide with tips for parents on connecting with their kids during emotional moments. In addition, the booklet describes the personality of each Kimochi character, and its favorite number, color, and snack - another chance for parents and kids to connect and discuss personality traits and feelings.

We received the Kimochi Bug and a set of 6 extra "feelings". The bug is very cute, soft and cuddly. The toys are well made from soft fabrics and in bright, beautiful colors. I like that each emotion is a different color: purple for brave, pink for happy, teal for left out. My older daughter started reading the "feelings", and the little one noticed the faces. Both loved the bug, and happily played with it and the "feelings".

The three "feelings" that come with each toy are conveniently stored in a drawstring bag. The extra 6 "feelings" we got are in a durable, resealable plastic bag. There is even a little red heart drawn on the Loved "feeling". One of the "feelings" is blank, and your child can make their own using the washable marker that comes with the pack. The bug has a little pocket on the front where the child can place the "feeling" they want to express. Kids can get in touch with their feelings via puppetry and pretend play. When they are comfortable talking about their feelings, they build self-esteem and confidence.

In addition to the bug, there is also a Kimochi cat, cloud, Lovey Dove, and Huggtopus - a huggable purple octopus. Each is priced at $25 and comes with a set of 3 "feelings". The set of 6 Mixed Feelings Pack retails at $12. If you are looking for a way to help your kids deal with expressing their emotions, try the Kimochi. These toys were awarded the Creative Child Magazine 2009 Seal of Excellence / Best Vacation Products by Dr. Toy, kaboose.com's top 13 amazing toys for 2009 for preschoolers, the 2009 Family Choice Awards and the 2010 Tillywig Top Fun Award.
