Affordable and Stylish Prescription Glasses from EyeBuyDirect: Review and Giveaway (Ends 11/15) CLOSED

Sunday, October 31, 2010 Posted by Dina

My husband is very picky about his glasses. The frames have to be stylish yet simple, the lenses must be scratch-resistant and anti-reflective, and the glasses must be light and comfortable to wear. Choosing the right pair usually involves a family trip to the optician, and trying on several frames until he makes the final decision.

Ordering prescription glasses online was a new experience for hubby. We sat down together and browsed the wide selection of frames at EyeBuyDirect.com. It took no time at all to narrow it down using his preferred material (titanium) as the selection criteria. We chose the Rome frames in gunmetal, then entered his prescription and lens preferences (super thin), and the lens options (anti-reflective). If you don't care about thin lenses, standard ones are included for free with the frame purchase, as well as anti-scratch coating on all types of lenses.

The ordering process was quick and seamless, and we received the glasses in two weeks. They came with a free case and polishing cloth. My husband tried the glasses on - and has not taken them off since (well, during the day that is). He says they are comfy, light, and give him Xray vision - I think he's just kidding on that last one. But he does see perfectly when he's wearing them. And I am happy they cost about half of what we would have spent at the optician's - plus we saved a trip and a couple of hours! Win-win in my book.

The Giveaway
One lucky reader will win a free pair of prescription eyeglasses from EyeBuyDirect - frame and lenses - up to a $100 value!

Please note this prize excludes designer eyewear and sunglasses, and the winner may choose any lenses option except ’thin as possible’. Free U.S. USPS shipping is included.

Delicious Treats from Ruth's Brownie Kitchen: Review and Giveaway (Ends 11/14) CLOSED

Sunday, October 31, 2010 Posted by Dina

I love good brownies - those beautiful delectable squares that just melt in your mouth. When I received a box from Ruth's Brownie Kitchen, I could not get it open fast enough. I had picked a half dozen Hazelnut Extra Fudgy Brownies because in my book, the fudgier the better - and I also love hazelnuts.

The content of this box smelled delicious, and the brownies were packaged beautifully in a pink gift box. There was even a pink card inside. The brownies are a generous size - 3 by 3 inches and over 5 oz - so I gave my kids half a brownie each which was enough for them. I enjoyed mine with a side of vanilla ice cream - mmm! The brownies were tasty and flavorful, not too rich - just right. And there were tons of whole hazelnuts inside. Totally delicious! I was not surprised to find out that the company uses King Arthur flour - the best flour I've ever used in my kitchen. The delectable chocolateness comes from special blends of Valrhona's premium chocolates and / or cocoa. In addition, the brownies are made with organic butter, eggs, milk and cream. Last but not least, all products are made without preservatives or chemicals.

Ruth's Brownie Kitchen has many appetizing varieties of brownies to drool over on their site. In addition, they offer biscotti, cookies, bars and squares, fine chocolates, and even cocoas, coffees and teas. Their goodies are handcrafted and shipped within hours of leaving the oven at the small, artisanal bakery located in the Hudson Valley.

The Giveaway
How would you like to try some of these treats? One lucky reader will win a $25 gift certificate to Ruth's Brownie Kitchen to spend on whatever they wish!

To enter, please visit Ruth's Brownie Kitchen and sign up for their e-mail alerts, then leave a comment below with the e-mail address you used.

Book Review: Spilling the Beans on the Cat's Pajamas by Judy Parkinson

Sunday, October 31, 2010 Posted by Dina

Book Description
Cat got your tongue? Well, for Pete's sake, use this collection of colorful expressions to enrich your everyday speech. This book spills the beans on our best-loved euphemisms and most curious sayings, explaining their fascinating origins and the remarkable stories that surround them. It rounds up the usual suspects - the catch phrases, quotations, and expressions that keep our language flourishing - and makes them easy to find in a convenient A-to-Z format.

Did you know that . . .
  • The expressions all that glitters is not gold and apple of the eye have each been in use for more than a thousand years?
  • To bark up the wrong tree comes from the sport of raccoon hunting?
  • Embarrassed parents can thank the songwriter Cole Porter for the euphemism the birds and the bees?
About the Author
Judy Parkinson is a graduate of Bristol University. She is a producer of documentaries, music videos, and commercials, and won a Clio award for a Greenpeace ad. Parkinson has published four books and has contributed to a show of life drawings at the Salon des Arts, Kensington.

My Review
This is a new title from Reader's Digest fun and educational Blackboard Books Series. I've read and reviewed several of these books, and I've enjoyed every one of them. Spilling the Beans on the Cat's Pajamas: Popular Expressions - What They Mean and How We Got Them provides an entertaining look into the origin of many popular expressions, arranged alphabetically. In case you forgot what they meant, this book will remind you. Even if you know all about what these colorful euphemisms stand for - and use some of them every day - I bet you may learn a thing or two about how they came to be in the English language. From adding insult to injury to reading the riot act to zipping it, here's to spilling the beans about them all!

Ice Queen Earrings from Allura Marie: Review

Friday, October 29, 2010 Posted by Dina

I love beautiful jewelry, and earrings are one of my favorite ways to make a fashion statement. I need them to be stylish yet noticeable - and I need them to be light. I am not a slave to fashion, and I am not willing to suffer any discomfort because of heavy earrings, no matter how pretty.

My new Ice Queen earrings from Allura Marie are stunning - and feather light. This beautiful pair is made from long and short cable chain in gray gunmetal and features Jet Hematite and Light Sapphire Swarovski Elements Crystal beads. The earrings are long - about 3.25" - and perfectly bring out the color of my eyes. Ice Queen is the right name for them because these earrings look definitely regal. They go equally well with a casual outfit or an elegant dress. My daughter who has the rare gift to notice beauty right away told me I had to wear them all the time.

Allura Marie is a couture jewelry boutique offering beautiful earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and more. Check them out, and you are sure to find a piece for yourself or for a much-appreciated gift.

Your Fragrance on the Go: Travalo Review

Friday, October 29, 2010 Posted by Dina

I love perfume, and always buy the largest bottle of my favorites I can find. There is one problem with that - the bottles are too heavy and bulky to carry around in my purse, and I don't even want to think about air travel and the carry-on limits.

Luckily, now I no longer have to leave my favorite fragrance at home - thanks to Travalo. This aptly named new product launched recently by Vivabox is a pocket-size perfume atomizer. I received for review a Travalo in Perfect Pink. This cute little gadget lets me carry 50 sprays of my favorites in my purse, gym bag, or suitcase. Travalo features a no mess internal refill system that easily transfers perfume from a full-size bottle into a cute travel-size container.

Travalo is made from light yet sturdy aircraft grade aluminum and has a clear window on the side that lets me see how much perfume is left. It is small and compact - a little over 3 inches long and weighs just half an ounce. In addition, Travalo is eco-friendly because it's 98% recyclable, and approved for carry-on luggage.

And don't think Travalo is just for girls. It comes in gold, black, silver and red, so your guy can carry his fragrance in style, too. If you cannot commit to just one perfume, there are stylish leather travel cases that hold two or even three Travalos.

Travalo is available for purchase online and at select Target and boutique retailers. Think stocking stuffers!

Playtime with Myachi: Review

Thursday, October 28, 2010 Posted by Dina

Myachi are hand sacks - rectangular baggies measuring 3.5 by 1.5 inches, filled with some sort of sand-like material. Intended for kids over 3 years old, the Myachi can be a fun toy for adults as well. Catching a Myachi hand sack is similar to catching an egg - only they do not break if you drop them, and you must catch them on the back of your hand.

The technique is not hard to master although it does take some practice. Each Myachi comes with two finger grips for easier handling. Once you've mastered the basics, there are all sorts of moves and tosses to work on. Footstalls / kicks, skate tricks, and street surfin' all sound like fun - check these out and more at Myachi.com.

My husband and kids enjoyed playing with the Myachi hand sack, and I must confess I am getting rather fond of the little baggie, too. The Myachi come in all sorts of neat colors, materials and designs, and would make great stocking stuffers or party favors.

Book Review: The Miracle of Me from Conception to Birth by Amy Pedersen

Thursday, October 28, 2010 Posted by Dina

The Miracle of Me by Amy Pedersen follows babies' development during the 40 weeks from conception to birth. Every week devotes a four-line rhyme to describing the typical baby in utero at that stage, told from the point of view of the baby. I loved the photographs perfectly illustrating how an unborn baby grows. Every page features a ruler that indicates the average baby's size at this time.

The Miracle of Me From Conception to Birth by Amy Pedersen provides a simplified overview of babies in the womb. The book can be a useful tool in explaining mom's pregnancy to young children, and would make a nice gift for expectant families with kids.

Carry Your Laptop In Style

Thursday, October 28, 2010 Posted by Dina

I am just about done with holiday shopping for this year. One of the few people I still need to shop for is a close friend - one of those girls with loads of style and sophistication. Since she travels a lot for her job, and I've been thinking of getting her a stylish briefcase for her laptop. Now I just have to find the perfect one!

CSN Stores has a ton of options that I love. And most of them ship for free! Just check out the beautiful McKlein USA W Series Geneva Italian Leather Women's Briefcase in Pink. Or, for a more budget-friendly and still very stylish option - the Mango Tango Portfolio Bag in Orange Mango. And if I decide to stick with pink - the Mango Tango Faux Suede Luggage Laptop Bag in Pink. Now I want one for myself, too! Where did I put that wish list...

Disclaimer / Disclosure: No monetary compensation was received for this post. I will receive a voucher from CSN Stores to use toward an item of my choice for review. Stay tuned for the review post in the coming weeks.

How to Choose a Crib Mattress

Thursday, October 28, 2010 Posted by Dina

When I was preparing the nursery for my first baby, a crib was on top of my list. Cute bedding, of course, and a place to keep the adorable baby clothes. The mattress for said crib was somewhat of an afterthought. As a mom-to-be who never paid much attention to crib mattresses, I was amazed at how many choices there were. At my local baby emporium, I was at a loss how to pick among the dozen models, arranged in order of price, coming from various manufacturers. I wanted something safe and comfy, of course, but not necessarily top of the line. Finally, I chose a crib mattress mid-range - figured, a newborn weighs just a few pounds, how solid should a crib mattress be anyway?

A few years and three mattresses later, I can tell you that a baby does need a quality crib mattress. Once the baby in question starts growing and standing up in said crib - not to mention the older siblings who inevitably find out that the crib is a fun and safe jumping place - the mattress' durability becomes quite important. Nowadays there are even more choices - from a naturepedic crib mattress to organic cotton mattress, memory foam mattress, along with the innerspring crib mattress. So many choices to make! Bottom line, I recommend reading up online about the advantages of various crib mattresses before you head to the store. It would save your sanity and your time - and not to mention having to buy three crib mattresses along the way.

Cleaning with CSN Stores: Haan Personal Handheld Steamer Review

Thursday, October 28, 2010 Posted by Dina

I've been using a steam mop for years, and I like the easy cleaning and disinfecting of my floors with just water. There are other areas around my house that I wanted to steam clean but a mop is not intended for other surfaces. A portable steamer would be just the ticket for those, and I was excited to try the Haan Personal Handheld Steamer from CSN Stores.

The Haan steamer resembles a teapot in a happy shade of yellow. It comes with a long cord and a set of various attachments that allowed me to clean and sanitize to my heart's content. It's amazing how many different things I can clean with this steamer: my stove, fixtures, bathroom, toilets, little nooks and crannies around the kitchen, mirrors and windows, upholstered furniture, and more. The steamer heats up water to 212 degrees, and hold 200 ml at a time. It takes about 3 minutes for the water to heat enough, and depending on how you use it, the steamer provides up to 15 minutes of cleaning power. It is easy to use and relatively light, with a comfortable handle.

You do have to wait for the steamer to cool down before refilling it and using it again, so the Haan Personal Handheld Steamer works best for small jobs that do not require a lot of time. For big tasks, you would need a big machine. They also come at a much higher price - for me, this steamer is just perfect to use for everyday cleaning jobs around the house.

Making Delicious Treats with CSN Stores: Cotton Candy Maker Review

Thursday, October 28, 2010 Posted by Dina

My kids love cotton candy just as much as my husband does. That's the top choice treat every time we go to the zoo. When I found out that CSN Stores sells a Nostalgia Electrics Hard Candy/Sugar Free Cotton Candy Maker, I knew we had to try it.

The cotton candy machine has a very cute design, and can make cotton candy from plain sugar as well as from your favorite hard candy. This is a great feature for those who prefer sugar-free candy for dietary or health reasons. Since sugar is not a problem for my family, we made cotton candy from several hard candy flavors. The machine comes with two plastic cones for the cotton candy, and it takes very little practice to master. My kids and my husband loved the results. Their only compliant was that the amount of cotton candy we can prepare at a time is quite small - the machine only allows using two hard candies at a time, and these do not make the mammoth servings of cotton candy you see at the zoo. Well duh - professional cotton candy machines are so much larger! There is definitely no space for one of those in my kitchen. Personally, I prefer the size of the servings we get from the cotton candy machine. Even if I have to make quite a few of them for my cotton candy fans at home.

The cotton candy maker is easy to clean, and would make a great gift for those who just cannot wait to get to the fair to have some yummy cotton candy.

Book Review and Blog Tour: The Love Goddess' Cooking School by Melissa Senate

Thursday, October 28, 2010 Posted by Dina

Book Description
From the bestselling author of See Jane Date and The Secret of Joy comes a charming, warm-hearted story about a woman’s search for happiness after inheriting her grandmother’s cooking school.

When Holly Maguire inherits “Camilla’s Cucinotta,” her late grandmother’s home-based Italian cooking school in Blue Crab Island, Maine, twelve of the sixteen students for the upcoming fall class drop out. After all, Holly isn’t a seventy-five-year-old Milanese love goddess, whose secret sauces had aphrodisiac properties and whose kitchen table fortune-telling often came true. Holly, a broken-hearted thirty-year-old who’s never found her niche, can barely cook at all. But she’s determined to keep her beloved grandmother’s legacy alive. Armed with Camilla’s hand-scrawled recipe book, Holly welcomes her students: apprentice Mia, a twelve-year-old desperate to learn to cook Italian to stop her divorced father from marrying his ditzy girlfriend; Juliet, Holly’s childhood friend grieving for her newborn—and the marriage she left behind on the mainland; Simon, struggling to be an every-other-weekend dad to his young son after his wife left him; and Tamara, a single thirty-something yearning for love.

Mixing fervent wishes and bittersweet memories with simmering sauces and delectable Italian dishes, Holly and the students of The Love Goddess’ Cooking School create their own recipes for happiness and become masters of their own fortunes.

My Review
The Love Goddess' Cooking School, just published October 26 by Gallery Books, was my second Melissa Senate book. I enjoyed reading this book just as I did her earlier novel, The Secret of Joy. The Love Goddess' Cooking School is a pleasing and comforting read, similarly to the Italian recipes it features. The drama, the cooking, the likable - albeit sometimes slightly unbelievable - characters all make for a filling dish. Finding herself by following Nonna's recipes is a feat that Holly does eventually accomplish, helping her cooking class students deal with the pain in their own lives along the way. The Love Goddess' Cooking School is just what the chef ordered for a rainy day by the fire, curled up with a cup of espresso and a side of biscotti or tiramisu.

Disclaimer / Disclosure: Book description and cover art courtesy of the publisher. I received a complimentary copy of the book with no obligation for a positive review. No compensation - monetary or in kind - has been obtained for this post.

Superhero Capes for Everyone: PowerCapes Review and Giveaway (Ends 11/10) CLOSED

Wednesday, October 27, 2010 Posted by Dina

My kids love playing dress up. Princesses and superheroes are their favorite characters. And what is a superhero without a cape?

PowerCapes make custom superhero capes for kids and adults. I ordered one as a Halloween surprise for my daughter who loved it at first sight. Since purple and pink are her favorite colors, I picked a purple cape with a medium pink crown and her initial in raspberry. The personalized superhero cape arrived quickly and was very well made. I love the quality satin fabric and vivid colors. The cape survives well hours of play and multiple washes, and I could not be more pleased with that.

The capes come in three sizes: sidekick for kids 2-7, hero for kids 6-10, and superhero for bigger kids and adults. One thing that I would change is the Velcro closure. After wearing the cape for a while, my daughter complains that the Velcro is scratchy. I understand that the Velcro is a safer choice than ties, for example, but a button closure or snaps would eliminate this issue. Other than that, the cape is perfect.

Personalized Labels for Special Occasions: Review and Giveaway (Ends 11/9) CLOSED

Tuesday, October 26, 2010 Posted by Dina

One of my close friends is expecting her first baby in a couple of months, and I am hosting a baby shower for her. I love beautiful stationery, so I had a blast selecting the perfect invitations for the happy event. Then I came across the perfect finishing touch: custom labels from heels above.

This company offers personalized labels and tags that are great for many occasions. You choose the style, font, color, size, shape and more. I received a sheet of beautiful It’s a Girl! labels that are coming in very handy for my friend’s baby shower invites. The labels are a nice shade of purple. They are round and measure 2 inches in diameter. One sheet of labels includes 12. I must say that these labels look oh-so-stylish on the back of the invitation envelopes. If purple is not your theme color, there are tons of other shades to choose from.

The other labels I received are heart-shaped Congratulations labels in red. They come 15 to a sheet, and the print quality is excellent. The intricate Nouveau style looks great on these labels, although I prefer the simpler Icon and Briar Rose styles.

No matter what the special occasion – an engagement or a wedding, a bridal or baby shower, or a special party – these custom labels and tags are an elegant details that can complement your invitation, party favor, or thank you note.

The Giveaway
One lucky winner will get a $20 gift certificate to heels above!

To enter, please comment below how you'd spend the gift certificate if you won.

Happy Cleaning with the Rubbermaid Reveal Spray Mop: Review and Giveaway (Ends 11/6) CLOSED

Friday, October 22, 2010 Posted by Dina

Mopping at my house is a daily occurrence. Yes, really. And since I am the one who gets to do this chore most of the time, it is very important that I do what I can to make it easier and - dare I say it - enjoyable.

The Rubbermaid Reveal Spray Mop is the little domestic miracle that got my kids fighting over who gets to mop the floor. I am not kidding. They fetch the mop from the closet, then take turns mopping the floors in the kitchen and bathrooms. I insist on doing the hardwood floors myself because I just love looking at the happy gleam of the just-cleaned wood. Oh the joy of little things!

But let's step away from my domestic poetry for a minute so I can tell you just what makes the Reveal mop so wonderful. First, it comes with a bottle that you can fill with any solution you like - even plain water. I got the Rubbermaid Reveal Spray Mop Kit that includes 2 bottles, so I have the tile solution in one and the hardwood solution in the other. I marked a W on it (as in wood, you know), and when done with one type of flooring, I replace the bottle and the pad and just keep on mopping. The kit comes with three pads - when one gets dirty, I just get another it and keep cleaning like a pro. Speaking of the pad - it's a washable, reusable microfiber cleaning pad that works perfectly on any type of moppable (yes, now it's a word) surface in my house. It's thick, it's red, and attaches securely to the head of the mop. The pads are sturdy and durable, and can take up to 100 washes. No need for batteries or electricity - it's all very green in a stylish red.

I can control the amount of cleaning solution sprayed on the floor thanks to a comfy trigger that dispenses the liquid from the bottle. I must say that a little solution goes a long way, and this is one of the reasons I keep the two bottles with floor-specific cleaners always ready to go. Speaking of cleaning solutions, all you need is 2 tablespoons of your preferred cleaner per bottle, the rest is plain ol' water.

The head of the mop is wide and low - covers a lot of surface and can even mop under my doors. No more maneuvering in the tight confines of my powder room to make sure every little corner has been mopped. Now I just slide the mop under the open door to get to the area behind it. A neat little trick in my book.

Rubbermaid has thought of every little detail when they designed the Reveal Spray Mop. The bottles can stand upright and close with no dripping. The handle has a spongy thing where your hand will be gripping it - the hand that is not pulling the spray trigger, that is. The quality of the mop and its accessories is excellent. It's perfect, right down to the colors - gray and red - and I would not change a single thing. I love it, my floors love it, and the kids take on mopping willingly! Feel free to insert wicked mommy laugh here. Yes, we all do chores around the house. Vive la mop!

The Giveaway
One very lucky reader will win the same amazing Rubbermaid Reveal Spray Mop kit that I received! It includes a mop, two bottles, three pads, and a map to happy mopping (just kidding about the map, you don't need one once you have the Rubbermaid Reveal Spray Mop). All that has a retail value of $45.

To enter, please comment below how you keep your floors clean.

For extra entries, feel free to do any or all of the following:
  • subscribe to the Rubbermaid Adventures in Organization Blog and get 2 entries;
  • share what Rubbermaid product you love;
  • follow me on twitter and tweet about this giveaway – you can do this once a day, feel free to copy and paste: "Win a @Rubbermaid Reveal Spray Mop Kit - a $45 value - and mop like a pro! #Giveaway ends 11/6 @aitmama #win #contests http://tiny.cc/mdv0p"
  • follow Rubbermaid on twitter;
  • go here for additional ways to get extra entries.
The deadline to enter is November 6, 2010, 11:59pm EST. A winner will be randomly selected and notified by e-mail. They will have 72 hours to get back to me, or an alternate will be chosen. Open to those with mailing addresses in the U.S. or Canada.

Disclaimer / Disclosure: This review reflects my personal opinion and experience with the mop which may differ from yours. Product sample, information and image courtesy of the sponsor. The winner will receive their prize directly from the sponsor, solely responsible for prize fulfillment. No monetary compensation was provided for this post.

Dropps Available Nationwide: Celebrate with a Giveaway (Ends 11/5) CLOSED

Friday, October 22, 2010 Posted by Dina

About six months ago, I did a review for the Dropps detergent. If you have not tried yet these fab little pacs that conveniently dissolve in water and take almost zero space up there on your laundry room shelves, you really should! And now that's easier than ever because Dropps will be available at Target stores nationwide, starting October 25. That's on Monday! Make sure to check out the Dropps in the laundry isle the next time you stop by your neighborhood Target. They will be there in two varieties: Fresh Scent and Scent + Dye Free. This is the first time that Dropps will truly be available nationwide on a store level. Hooray for easy laundry that is good for the environment!

The Giveaway
To celebrate this momentous event, the company is giving away a one-month supply of Dropps to a lucky reader of this blog! Well, it could last you even longer - depending on how much laundry you do - because the prize will be a 42-load pouch in Fresh Scent.

Audio Book Giveaway: Katie Up and Down the Hall - The True Story of How One Dog Turned Five Neighbors into a Family by Glenn Plaskin (Ends 11/3) CLOSED

Wednesday, October 20, 2010 Posted by Dina

Book Description
A personal memoir by bestselling author and celebrity journalist Glenn Plaskin, KATIE is a moving story about a man who discovers the true meaning of family after adopting a cocker spaniel puppy. Through the magnetic personality of his mischievous dog, the author soon makes powerful connections with several of his down-the-hall neighbors in a high-rise located in the unique Battery Park City neighborhood of Lower Manhattan. First, Katie trots into the lives of Pearl and Arthur, a warm-hearted elderly couple just a few doors down from Glenn. Later, John, a single Dad, and his rambunctious young son, Ryan, also move in and are seduced by Katie's charms.

All of their lives are profoundly changed as they are transformed from neighbors to friends to family, with Pearl as matriarch. The motherless boy finds a "Granny"; his Dad inherits a mother, Glenn discovers a confidante. Set in New York City, we witness nearly sixteen years of antics and family adventures spanning Hollywood high times, bad health, accidents, blustery winters, even the terrors of 9/11. Through it all, the family clings to each other, sharing a deep bond that give each comfort, support and security.

Based upon a widely-read article in Family Circle, here is an unforgettable story about the love that makes a family - one that transcends the hard realities of time, tragedy, and inevitable loss.

Audio Book Giveaway: Room by Emma Donoghue (Ends 10/31) CLOSED

Sunday, October 17, 2010 Posted by Dina

Book Description
To five-year-old Jack, ROOM is the entire world. It is where he was born and grew up; it's where he lives with his Ma as they learn and read and eat and sleep and play. At night, his Ma shuts him safely in the wardrobe, where he is meant to be asleep when Old Nick visits.

ROOM is home to Jack, but to Ma, it is the prison where Old Nick has held her captive for seven years. Through determination, ingenuity, and fierce motherly love, Ma has created a life for Jack. But she knows it's not enough… not for her or for him. She devises a bold escape plan, one that relies on her young son's bravery and a lot of luck. What she does not realize is just how unprepared she is for the plan to actually work.

Told entirely in the language of the energetic, pragmatic five-year-old Jack, ROOM is a celebration of resilience and the limitless bond between parent and child, a brilliantly executed novel about what it means to journey from one world to another.

Audio Book Giveaway: Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks (Ends 10/28) CLOSED

Thursday, October 14, 2010 Posted by Dina

Book Description
When a mysterious young woman named Katie appears in the small North Carolina town of Southport, her sudden arrival raises questions about her past. Beautiful yet self-effacing, Katie seems determined to avoid forming personal ties until a series of events draws her into two reluctant relationships: one with Alex, a widowed store owner with a kind heart and two young children; and another with her plainspoken single neighbor, Jo. Despite her reservations, Katie slowly begins to let down her guard, putting down roots in the close-knit community and becoming increasingly attached to Alex and his family.

But even as Katie begins to fall in love, she struggles with the dark secret that still haunts and terrifies her . . . a past that set her on a fearful, shattering journey across the country, to the sheltered oasis of Southport. With Jo's empathic and stubborn support, Katie eventually realizes that she must choose between a life of transient safety and one of riskier rewards . . . and that in the darkest hour, love is the only true safe haven.

Music Review and Giveaway: KT Tunstall Tiger Suit (Ends 10/27) CLOSED

Wednesday, October 13, 2010 Posted by Dina

KT Tunstall is a Scottish-born singer and songwriter. I was not familiar with this Grammy-nominated musician until I heard her latest album, Tiger Suit. And I am so glad I did.

This new CD from the multi-platinum singer was just released on October 5. Tiger Suit includes 11 songs, including  the first single "Fade Like A Shadow" that is already a Top 20 radio hit. All tracks feature catchy melodies and KT's amazing, expressive voice. My first favorite was the first song I heard - Uummanaq Song. Then I realized I love the entire album and can't really single out just one fave.

All songs are written by KT Tunstall, the lyrics as remarkable as the music and vocals. She had me dancing and singing along, and looking up her earlier work.
Tiger Suit is KT's third album. Her previous hit songs include the Grammy-nominated "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree," "Suddenly I See," Other Side of the World" and "Hold On".

You can connect with KT Tunstall on Twitter and Facebook.

KT will be on tour this fall, so make sure to check her out if she's performing near you.

Music Review and Giveaway: Rockabye Baby! (Ends 10/25) CLOSED

Monday, October 11, 2010 Posted by Dina

I loved singing lullabies to my kids when they were babies. After what felt like a few thousand repetitions, I sometimes longed for a break. Enter lullabies on CD. I have an entire collection of them, and some are so good that I can listen to them anytime, anywhere.

Rockabye Baby! was founded on the neat idea that rock music can be taken down a few notches and performed with calming musical instruments to make instrumental lullabies. I received the Rockabye Baby! Lullaby Renditions of Pearl Jam CD, and I must say it is indeed surprisingly relaxing and pleasant to listen to. They use soothing mellotrons, vibraphones and bells for an altogether slumber inducing effect. The thirteen tracks flow together in a calming succession. These unusual lullabies may be just the ticket to get your energetic baby to dose off. I found they make me sleepy, too!

The Giveaway
Win a Rockabye Baby! Lullaby Renditions of Pearl Jam CD!

To enter, please comment below which Rockabye Baby! album do you like best.

Say Thank You and More with Paperspring: Review and Giveaway (Ends 10/24) CLOSED

Sunday, October 10, 2010 Posted by Dina

Paperspring is an online retailer based in L.A. They offer contemporary personalized cards and stationery. All matte cards are printed on 100% post consumer waste, although you would have never guessed it just by looking at the cards.

I received a set of 25 thank you notes of high quality cardstock. I picked the eco flowers thanks in eggplant, since I love purple. The colors are beautiful, and the cards and envelopes feel luxuriously thick. I opted for a blank inside but the cards can be personalized with a text of your choice. Paperspring have a wide selection of beautiful designs, and the hardest part for me was to choose among them. Delivery was very fast, and the cards and envelopes were beautifully tied with white ribbon.

In addition to thank you cards, Paperspring’s range of products includes photo birth announcements, baby shower invitations, holiday cards, greeting cards, birthday party invitations and personalized stationery.
Their vision is to create fresh ideas on paper and in turn capture, share and celebrate the important moments in life.

Vitamins Without the Pill: alternaVites Review and Giveaway (Ends 10/23) CLOSED

Saturday, October 09, 2010 Posted by Dina

Usually, I have no problem swallowing my vitamins. Ever now and then though, a huge capsule of calcium supplements gets stuck about halfway, and it feels like I will never get it down. Over 100 million Americans have some difficulty swallowing pills - and for them, alternaVites may be just the ticket to taking vitamins that are not a hard pill to swallow.

alternaVites come in single-serve packets, 30 to a box. Each packet contains a daily dose of multivitamin and mineral crystals that dissolve on your tongue. They taste quite good and remind me of powdered candy - sans the sugar. There is no need to mix them with water, and you can take them anywhere. Personally, I like to have my vitamins at bedtime because it's easier to keep track, so portability is typically not an issue. For a weekend out of town or a vacation, it's great not having to carry an entire bottle of pills for just a few doses. alternaVites make it easy - especially if you spend a lot of time travelling.

alternaVites contain 23 essential nutrients and no animal products, no artificial colors and flavors or preservatives, and no chemicals used to glue pills together. A one-month supply retails at $29.99. You can connect with alternaVites on Facebook.

The Giveaway
One person will win a box of alternaVites!

To enter, please comment below how you take your vitamins.

You may do any and all of the following for extra chances to win:
  • follow me on twitter and tweet about this giveaway, feel free to copy and paste: "Win a box of alternaVites, the vitamins to go that are easy to swallow! #Giveaway ends 10/23 @aitmama #win #contests http://tiny.cc/yg2dl" – you may do this once a day;
