Book Giveaway: Peace and Plenty by Sarah Ban Breathnach (Ends 1/14) CLOSED

Friday, December 31, 2010 Posted by Dina

Book Description
"When money is plentiful, this is a man's world. When money is scarce, it is a woman's world." Unearthed in a 1932 Ladies Home Journal, this quote is the call to arms that begins PEACE AND PLENTY, Sarah Ban Breathnach's answer to the world's-- and her own personal-- financial crisis. As only Ban Breathnach can, she culls together this compendium of advice, deeply personal anecdotes, and excerpts from magazines, books, and newspapers-- particularly those of the Great Depression-- to inspire readers who are mired in today's financial difficulties.

Focusing on her own personal path, Sarah Ban Breathnach will relate never-before revealed details about how she fell from the financial top to the bottom. Readers will immediately see how deeply she understands the plight of those trying to maintain a happy and comfortable home, while at the same time not even knowing if they will be able to make the mortgage to keep that home.

Sarah has proved to be the voice of comfort for years to women who are spiritually bankrupt, and now she will reach to those who are financially strapped, showing them how to pull themselves out of their psychic and fiscal crises while providing deep comfort and reassurance throughout.

Furniture Shopping at CSN Stores

Wednesday, December 29, 2010 Posted by Dina

I love shopping online, and browsing the 200+ sites of CSN Stores is a real treat. They offer a huge selection of items, competitive prices, and free shipping on many products. How cool is it to buy a set of elegant counter height stools and have them delivered to your door? No lugging heavy boxes, no measuring your trunk ten times and hoping the boxes will fit, no renting a truck - a friend of mine actually does that when she has to shop for furniture. Oh and speaking of deals, right now you can get additional 15% off purchases of $349 or more with promo code BARSTOOL15. Many models are already 30-40% off, so this is a great time to get a stylish new set of bar stools for less. Narrowing it down is the hard part!

Disclaimer / Disclosure: No monetary compensation was received for this post. I will receive a voucher from CSN Stores to use toward an item of my choice for review. Stay tuned for the review post in the coming weeks.

Dish Liquid from Tropical Traditions: Review and Giveaway (Ends 1/12) CLOSED

Wednesday, December 29, 2010 Posted by Dina

Have you ever seen a gallon bottle of dish liquid? I had not either until I got the dish liquid from Tropical Traditions. I do know that I will use every drop.

I've been very happy with all household products I've tried from Tropical Traditions, sold under the brand name Household Traditions. The dish liquid is no exception. The oxygen bleach, the all-purpose cleaner, and the glass and surface cleaner are just a few other examples of excellent eco-friendly Household Traditions products.

This gentle yet effective dish liquid is based on coconut oil. It is free of fragrances, dyes, petroleum solvents, and respiratory and skin irritants. It breaks down safely and is better for the environment. The dish liquid was specifically developed for people with allergies, asthma and chemical sensitivities. Although I do not suffer from any of these, I do have sensitive skin and most dish soaps dry out my hands. I try to use rubber gloves when I do my dishes but sometimes I don't bother for a quick wash.

Thanks to the coconut oil’s moisturizing qualities, this dish liquid is safe for my skin works great on greasy dishes. I poured some into a pump soap bottle - I like to use one for my dish liquid, even when the original bottle is not a whole gallon - and have been using it for my pots and pans every day. It is low sudsing and works very well. For tougher jobs, I just let the pots soak for a while in hot water and a little bit of the dish liquid, then everything comes right off.

Deal Alert
You can buy the Tropical Traditions dish liquid at their website for $29.50 - a great discount off the regular price of $50. If you decide to buy this product or anything else from Tropical Traditions, as a first-time customer you can get a FREE Virgin Coconut Oil book with purchase. Find out all about coconut oil and its uses! Just use code 5251001 in the Referred by a Friend section and the book will be added to your order at no charge. You get a free book, and I get a coupon for referring you.

The Giveaway
Tropical Traditions are generously giving away a 1 gallon bottle of dish liquid to a lucky reader of this blog!

To enter, please take a look at the Tropical Traditions product line and tell me what else you'd like to try.

For extra entries, feel free to do any or all of the following:

  • subscribe to Tropical Traditions' newsletter - you'll know all about their specials, sales and promotions - and get 2 entries;
  • check out the free coconut recipes here and tell me which one you'd like to try;
  • follow me on twitter and tweet about this giveaway – you can do this once a day, feel free to copy and paste: "Win a gallon of great #eco-friendly dish liquid from @TropTraditions! #Giveaway ends 1/12 @aitmama #win #contests http://tiny.cc/ek2zw";
  • follow @TropTraditions on twitter;
  • go here for additional ways to get extra entries.
The deadline to enter is January 12, 2011, 11:59pm EST. A winner will be randomly selected and notified by e-mail. They will have 72 hours to get back to me, or an alternate will be chosen. Open to those with mailing addresses in the U.S. The winner will receive their prize directly from the sponsor.

Disclaimer: Tropical Traditions provided me with a free sample of this product to review, and I was under no obligation to review it if I so chose. Nor was I under any obligation to write a positive review or sponsor a product giveaway in return for the free product.

Book Review and Blog Tour: The Scent of Jasmine by Jude Deveraux

Wednesday, December 29, 2010 Posted by Dina

Book Description
Charleston, 1799: A daughter of Southern gentility and a gifted painter, Catherine Edilean Harcourt has no lack of suitors at home in Virginia, waiting to fulfill her dream of marriage and family. But Cay's adventurous spirit, fostered by growing up with her three brothers, is piqued while visiting her godfather in South Carolina. Bedridden with a broken leg, he asks Cay to fill in for him on an urgent task: on her way to a fancy dress ball, she must deliver a packed horse to an old friend's son—who also happens to be an escaped convict charged with murdering his wife! Cay agrees to the plan, which doesn't go at all as planned . . . whereupon she finds herself fleeing Alexander McDowell's captors, riding blind into the night with the fugitive Scotsman. Though she should fear him, Cay finds herself overwhelmingly attracted to Alex, and drawn into his tale of misguided justice and his innocence as they seek refuge in the steamy Florida everglades. Will trusting him be the worst mistake of her life? Or will falling in love be the salvation both of them have been looking for?

My Review
The Scent of Jasmine is my first Jude Deveraux book. It was rather surprising that I had not read any of her 39 New York Times bestsellers. I am now a fan because her latest book is a delightful and entertaining read. The Scent of Jasmine has a smart heroine that is ahead of her time, a dashing hero with dark past, a murder mystery, and an adventure deep into Florida's wilderness of 200 years ago. There is danger, bravery, romance, family devotion, and more. I enjoyed the characters of Cay and Alex, as well as those of Cay's brothers. This romantic tale from the Edilean series has placed Jude Deveraux on my to-read list.

Disclaimer / Disclosure: Book description and cover art courtesy of the publisher. I received a complimentary copy of the book with no obligation for a positive review. No compensation - monetary or in kind - has been obtained for this post.

SanLori Hot Chicks Candle: Review and Giveaway (Ends 1/11) CLOSED

Tuesday, December 28, 2010 Posted by Dina

I love yummy candles. The aroma, the ambiance, the nice subtle scent around the house. Right now, I am enjoying one from SanLori.

The Hot Chicks! Cosmo Compatible candle is a fruit infused mix of cranberry and citrus. I enjoy the fresh scent of this pretty poured glass candle . It is about 4 inches tall and came packaged in a nice box, completely gift-ready - no need for a card, since there is a To and From space on the back where you can just fill out the name of the lucky recipient. The gift box is topped off with a hot pink "feather puff" and is decorated with yellow antique swirls and yellow and pink Hot Chicks! Very stylish all around.

These hand-poured candles are made with blends of natural fragrances. Besides the Cosmo Compatible candle, there are five other scents, each with its own motto and fun name.

  • La Vie, Gypsy! – sandalwood and patchouli; motto: Don’t tell me how educated you are, tell me how much you traveled.
  • Espresso Yourself - cappuccino and hazelnut. Motto: I haven’t had my coffee yet, don’t make me kill you. Sounds like me in the mornings...
  • Olive My Love - olive, sage and thyme. Motto: La Dolce Vita! You want olive it!
  • Sea & Be Seen! - ocean breeze and white ginger. Motto: Sun, Surf & Smiles. You direct your feet… to the sunny side of the street!
  • French Kiss - lavender and verbena that evokes the warmth of the fields of Provence. Motto: Comprenez-vous Fabulous?
The suggested retail price is $15.00. I would not mind getting one of each for Valentine's Day!

In addition to these delicious candles, San Lori offers other stylish gifts and even party invitations.

Your Name in Crayons: Gaddy Nipper Crayons Review and Giveaway (Ends 1/10) CLOSED

Monday, December 27, 2010 Posted by Dina

My kids are very creative and drawing is one of their favorite pastimes. We have tons of crayons, pencils, chalk, markers, paints, and color paper that get used every day. This year, my daughter found a great treat in her Christmas stocking: her name in crayons.

Gaddy Nipper Crayons makes tons of fun shapes from recycled crayons - including ladybugs, dump trucks, and of course the alphabet. I ordered my daughter's name in silly swirls crayons. It came packaged nicely in a real crayon box and a cellophane bag with my daughter's name on it. The crayons were well made and so cute! She was thrilled to find them in her Christmas stocking. Besides silly swirls, your name in crayons can also be ordered in solid colors that look beautiful in the pictures I've seen.

Gaddy Nipper Crayons would make great party favors, birthday gifts, and just-because surprises for your little ones.

Organize Your Sink with simplehuman: Review

Thursday, December 23, 2010 Posted by Dina

I've been a fan of simplehuman products since last year when I reviewed their Sensor Soap Pump. A couple of weeks ago, simplehuman brought a spa feel to my bathroom with the Bamboo Shower Caddy. And now my kitchen sink is all organized for the new year thanks to two smart products: the simplehuman Large Sink Mat and the simplehuman Slim Sink Caddy.

My sink is stainless steel, so the sink caddy and mat are a perfect match. The sink caddy is rust proof - something very important since it is in almost constant contact with water. It attaches securely to the side of my sink, thanks to four large suction cups and a wire ledge hanger. I tried several spots for it, and the best place for the caddy is the side next to the garbage disposal. With a simple squeeze of the hanger, I can adjust its height so the caddy is positioned just right on the sink. I can fit a sponge and a dish brush with room to spare. The caddy lets my sponge dry faster when not in use and keeps it stashed away nicely. My sink looks tidier, thanks to the slim sink caddy.

The large sink mat is a pretty shade of charcoal grey, with a stainless steel handle for easy removal. I've used a sink mat before but it got clogged with food particles, was a mildew magnet and did not do a good job protecting my sink from scratches. The simplehuman sink mat is raised above the sink surface so water can flow freely under it. The edges and corners are slightly raised and my dinnerware does not slip or hit the walls of the sink while I wash it. The mat is made of rubber that is soft enough to protect my dishes and glasses from chipping but also sturdy enough to last. In addition, the sink mat comes with a 5 year warranty.

The large sink mat is about 13x16 inches and it's recommended for large sinks. If you have a double sink, consider the small sink mat. A slightly larger version of the slim caddy is also available from simplehuman.

Now I am wishing for the stylish simplehuman bamboo frame dishrack - it will go perfectly with the bamboo banana hanger I bought two weeks ago. Or, since our kitchen sink is stainless steel, the steel frame dishrack would be a great match, too.

Are You Pair Savvy?

Thursday, December 23, 2010 Posted by Dina

I love red wine, and cheese is one of my favorite foods to snack on - with or without wine. I never gave much thought on how to pair cheese and drinks unless I was hosting a party and serving both. Now there is a new tool that takes the guesswork out of pairing cheese, wine or beer.

Pair Savvy is a free application that works on both iPhone and Android phones and allows users to search by cheese, wine or beer varieties. All you need to do is download Pair Savvy to your mobile device, then start browsing. If you don't have a compatible phone, you can still use the Pair Savvy site to find good pairings.

Pair Savvy will come up with a pairing that has a list of suggested cheeses, California cheesemakers and brand names they can purchase at retail. In addition, Pair Savvy is linked to RealCaliforniaMilk.com so the app will update automatically with no need to download future updates. I love how some pairings suggest fruit accompaniments because fruit makes a cheese plate look so pretty and sophisticated.

Right now, I have some fresh mozzarella in the fridge. Sure, I can pair it with tomatoes for a delicious Insalata Caprese but what about drinks? According to Pair Savvy, it goes well with Chianti or Pilsner beer. I can serve it with dried fruit - I have some dried plums right now - or figs.

Brie, my husband's cheese of choice that we also happen to have in the fridge, goes with Cabernet Sauvignon, Gewurtztaminer, White Zinfandel, or steam beer. That's good because we love Cab. On the fruity side, we can serve dried fruits, grapes, and plums.

Pair Savvy is a great tool to have at any time but especially during the holiday season when many of us are entertaining. Cheers!

Audio Book Giveaway: C Street by Jeff Sharlet (Ends 1/6) CLOSED

Thursday, December 23, 2010 Posted by Dina

Book Description
C Street - where piety, politics, and corruption meet Jeff Sharlet is the only journalist to have reported from inside the C Street House, the Fellowship residence known simply by its Washington, DC address. The house has lately been the scene of notorious political scandal, but more crucially it is home to efforts to transform the very fabric of American democracy. And now, after laying bare its tenants' past in The Family, Sharlet reports from deep within fundamentalism in today's world, revealing that the previous efforts of religious fundamentalists in America pale in comparison with their long-term ambitions.

When Barack Obama entered the White House, headlines declared the age of culture wars over. In C Street, Sharlet shows why these conflicts endure and why they matter now - from the sensationalism of Washington sex scandals to fundamentalism's long shadow in Africa, where Ugandan culture warriors determined to eradicate homosexuality have set genocide on simmer.

We've reached a point where piety and corruption are not at odds but one and the same. Reporting with exclusive sources and explosive documents from C Street, the war on gays in Uganda, and the battle for the soul of America's armed forces - waged by a 15,000-strong movement of officers intent on "reclaiming territory for Christ in the military" - Sharlet reveals not the last gasp of old-time religion but the new front lines of fundamentalism.

The Giveaway
Thanks to publisher Hachette Book Group, I am hosting a giveaway for three (3) copies of C Street: The Fundamentalist Threat to American Democracy by Jeff Sharlet audio book.

To enter, please comment below what's the last good book you've read - or listened to.

  • go here for additional ways to get extra entries.
The deadline to enter is January 6, 2011, 11:59pm EST. Three winners will be randomly selected and notified by e-mail. They will have 72 hours to get back to me, or alternates will be chosen. Subject to this site's Official Rules.

Open to residents 18+ of U.S. and Canada only. No P.O. box addresses, please. Holiday Gift Guide 2010: Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Review

Wednesday, December 22, 2010 Posted by Dina

Some of you already know that I am a big fan of Sony Ericsson phones. A few weeks ago, I did a review of Sony Ericsson Vivaz, and now it's time for another great holiday gift idea: the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10.

The Xperia X10 is a new android phone from Sony Ericsson. It is beautifully designed, with every minute detail just perfectly thought out. The Xperia X10 is slightly larger than the Vivaz but still very compact and oh so stylish. It comes in pretty matte black. This is an amazing phone and so much more. To start, there is a huge 4-inch crystal clear display, a fast 1GHz Snapdragon processor and even a GPS.  The 8.1 megapixel camera takes excellent pictures and has smile detection, face recognition, auto focus and LED flash built in. Two signature applications, Mediascape and Timescape, let me do things I never expected from a cell phone.

Mediascape gathers music, photos, videos and content from my phone’s memory card as well as online.  I can easily browse, search, listen and share your media from one place. I love Picasa, and I can view photos I take with my phone not just on it but on my Picasa album, as well as on Facebook. I can listen to music on my Xperia, with the 3.5 mm headset that's included with the phone. While listening, with a touch of a button I can access information about the artist and more songs on YouTube. The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 really puts the smart back in smartphone!

Timescape is a communication application that organizes my social interactions chronologically. I can scroll up and down a single menu to see what I did on Facebook and Twitter, what messages or emails I've sent, and my photos, too. All is easily accessible and displayed on the sharp, clear display.

The Xperia X10 also has all the features you'd expect from a smartphone. It's a world phone with Bluetooth connectivity, games, maps, music, web, Qwerty keyboard, predictive typing, and tons more. A really neat feature is the ability to have friends and family hear my favorite song or phrase when they call. The graphics quality is outstanding. Battery life is up to 5 hours of talk time and up to 11 days in standby. Of course, the more I use its many capabilities, the faster the battery life is used up. I typically keep the Xperia X10 charging when I am at home and not using it.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 is available at AT&T for $99.99 with a two-year contract - if you can commit (I sure can!), it's a great deal considering all the fab things you can do with it. Right now, the activation is waived and they offer free overnight shipping - perfect for last-minute gift shopping. The full no-commitment price is $399.99.

To sum it up, I love the Xperia X10. It's a great gadget to give to those people on your list who love to stay connected and never go without their (smart)phone.

Gaggle of Chicks: Review

Tuesday, December 21, 2010 Posted by Dina

I do a lot of online shopping, and have come across many deal sites. Recently, I was introduced to one designed with moms in mind: Gaggle of Chicks.

Gaggle of Chicks offers daily deals on products for every member of the family at a fraction of the regular price. The discounts are up to 70% off the regular price. Like other group shopping sites, a deal on Gaggle of Chicks "hatches" after several people make the same purchase. Deals expire after only 48 hours, so you have to be fast and grab what you like before it's gone. After making a purchase, buyers receive a referral code to send to friends so that they can buy the product at the deal price, too. You earn $10 credit to Gaggle of Chicks every time someone you invite makes their first Gaggle purchase, and your friends instantly get a $10 credit as soon as they sign up. Let me know if you'd like a referral, and I'll be happy to send you an invite. If you sign up without referral, you get $5 credit in your account.

I found the site easy to navigate, and the deals quite attractive. I purchased a gift certificate to a site offering kitchen tools for kids. The deal was pay $20 for a gift code worth $30, or a 33% discount. I got three codes and used them to buy some cute stocking stuffers for my kids.

The easiest way to follow what deals are offered every day is to sign up for the daily emails. Every time I get one, I check out the deal and hop over to the site to find out if it is something I'd like to buy. Today, for instance, the deal is 50% off all-natural skin care. I am all stocked up on such products right now but it sure sounds good.

Gaggle of Chicks is free to join, and remember that as soon as you do, you get $5 credit in your account. Happy shopping!

Disclosure / Disclaimer: I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of Gaggle of Chicks and received a $50 gift code for the website to facilitate this review.

Katz Gluten Free, the company behind the wonderful chocolate strip, rugelech, cookies and more that I featured during The 12 Days of Chocolate, is having a fun winter giveaway! The grand prize is a huge box with one of each product Katz has. And if that was not enough, there is more: the winner will then be able to select their 10 favorite items, and get a second box filled with the treats they choose. Oh how I would love to win that one! Everyone can enter, and the lucky, lucky winner will be selected on January 3. Head over to their site to check it out. Entering is easy, and the prize rocking.

If you stopped by The 12 Days of Chocolate earlier this month, I am sure you remember the delicious chocolate rugelech from Katz Gluten Free. They have just added vanilla rugelech to their mouthwatering product line. I received a box, and must say it tastes so good. I put the rugelech in the freezer as soon as I got it, as instructed. The next day I got it out for dessert but I decided I could not wait for it to thaw. So I had some frozen... delicious! Then I had to stop myself from eating the entire box so that the family can try it. Light delectable dough together with flavorful vanilla... perfection! We all loved it. I wish it came in a jumbo box... but on second thought, the 7 oz box is just right.

The other new product from Katz Gluten Free are the Chocolate Frosted Cupcakes. I let the kids do most of the tasting - they loved the chocolate, of course, the yummy frosting, and the pretty colorful sprinkles. The cupcakes have to be thawed, too - I just left them out on the counter for a few hours and they were good and ready after dinner. They go perfectly with a glass of milk or a side of plain yogurt or vanilla ice cream. The cupcakes came in a box of 6, and did not last very long at my house.

Whether or not you need to follow a gluten-free diet, you should really try Katz Gluten Free. Right now, they are offering a free sample kit! All you have to do is pay for shipping. In addition, take advantage of free shipping on orders over $30 now through the holiday season.

The Giveaway
One lucky reader will win a Katz Gluten Free Sample Pack! The pack includes: 1 Slice each of  Whole Grain Bread, Sliced Challah Bread,  White Bread and Wholesome Bread, 1 Dinner Roll, a sample Cookie and Rugelech, and 1 Sample Slice of Marble Cake.

To enter, please check out the Katz Gluten Free store and comment below with the name of another product you'd like to try.

Audio Book Giveaway: The Daily Show with Jon Stewart Presents Earth (Ends 1/3) CLOSED

Monday, December 20, 2010 Posted by Dina

Book Description
Where do we come from? Who created us? Why are we here? These questions have puzzled us since the dawn of time, but when it became apparent to Jon Stewart and the writers of The Daily Show that the world was about to end, they embarked on a massive mission to write a book that summed up the human race: What we looked like; what we accomplished; our achievements in society, government, religion, science and culture -- all in a lavishly produced audiobook of approximately 200 minutes.

After two weeks of hard work and nights in the recording studio, they had their audiobook. EARTH (The Book) is the definitive guide to our species. With their trademark wit, irreverence, and intelligence, Stewart and his team will posthumously answer all of life's most hard-hitting questions, completely unburdened by objectivity, journalistic integrity, or even accuracy.

Holiday Gift Guide 2010: Staples Snowflake Digital Ornament Review

Saturday, December 18, 2010 Posted by Dina

I love taking pictures of the kids and framing my favorites each year to hang on our Christmas tree. Initially, I made a new ornament every year - just imagine our tree in 20 years or so! I came across a cute gift idea from Staples that allows me to display up to 200 photos in a single ornament.

The Omnitech Snowflake Digital Ornament has a digital photo display in the center of a large snowflake. It comes with a USB cable to connect to a computer and upload the pictures. There are slide show, calendar, and clock functions. The images are clear but I wish the screen were larger and the snowflake smaller. As it is, the photos are dwarfed by the frame. Still, I love having the ability to change the photos in the ornament or upload several and run them as a slide show. How cool is it to have pics of the kids from their first Christmas onwards, and be able to see them one after the other? The snowflake ornament looks great on our tree. It would make a nice gift for the grandparents, too.

The Omnitech Snowflake Digital Ornament is priced at $24.99 at Staples. Right now, it is on sale for $12.00. Unfortunately, it is out of stock on the website but you might find it at your local Staples store.

Holiday Gift Guide 2010: George Foreman Smart Kitchen Review and Giveaway (Ends 1/1) CLOSED

Saturday, December 18, 2010 Posted by Dina

George Foreman Healthy Cooking is best known for their fantastic grills. Earlier this year, I replaced my old grill with the George Foreman Healthy Cooking Evolve grill. I still use it all the time, and could not be happier.

The company has many other products that make healthy cooking at home very easy. During the busy holiday season, a great multi-tasking appliance that saves me tons of time in the kitchen is the George Foreman Smart Kitchen Multicooker.

The Smart Kitchen multicooker can cook rice, steam vegetables, sear and cook meat, slow-cook stews, warm sauces and more. I love versatile appliances, and this one takes one-pot cooking to a whole new level. The multicooker has nonstick coating that lets me cook without oil. I can cook rice in the pot and steam veggies, fish or shrimp at the same time, thanks to the steaming basket. The cover is made of tempered glass and I can see the food that's cooking without opening the lid. There is a one-touch 500°F digital Inteli-Probe™ rice-specific controls, as well as variable settings for stew, soups and sauces. I can even sear meat!

The Smart Kitchen multicooker can cook up to 30 cups of food. There are separate settings for brown and white rice, plus one each for steaming, cooking, simmering, searing, and browning. Each of these requires a different temperature. The controls are conveniently located on the side of the cooker. It even comes with a non-scratch spoon - they've really thought of everything!

The pot is removable, so once the food is ready, I can take it out and serve right away. The die-cast aluminum finish is very attractive. Just one pot to clean - another time saver! Besides, it's really easy to wash, too, because of the George Tough™ nonstick coating. All I need is a sponge with a bit of dish liquid.

If I were to make this multicooker even better, I would have a larger steaming tray for the veggies - or a second one that is deeper. We eat tons of steamed vegetables, and I can really use more space for preparing those in the multicooker.

The George Foreman Smart Kitchen Multicooker is now on sale at their site - you can get one for $39.99, half the full price of $79.99. I am thinking of getting one for my mom as a holiday gift - I know she'll love it! The multicooker is also available on Amazon and at other retailers.

One lucky reader of this blog will win a George Foreman Smart Kitchen Multicooker.

Holiday Gift Guide 2010: Ocarinas Review

Saturday, December 18, 2010 Posted by Dina

The ocarina is a musical instrument that has been around for a long time. The first known ocarina-like instruments appear about 12,000 years ago. An affordable gift for children and adults, an ocarina can be a fun way to develop one's love of music.

St. Louis Ocarina was established in 2005 to help revive interest in the art of ocarina playing. They offer a variety of ocarinas as well as sheet music, instructional DVDs, and ocarina accessories. I received a teacarina and the Legend of Zelda Rupee Tenor Ocarina, plus The Art of Ocarina, a beginner's guide to the ocarina. Both ocarinas are ceramic, well made and in beautiful colors: the teacarina in shades of blue and the Legend of Zelda ocarina in pink. The ocarinas came with an instruction booklet. My kids and I had a great time playing with the ocarinas. For a musical instrument, the ocarina is very affordable, easy to master, and takes no space at all - compared to a piano, for example.

The teacarina is my favorite between the two. It is very pretty, and music is produced by blowing through an air chamber, holding the teacarina as you would a tea cup. You change the pitch by fingering four holes of various sizes on the side on the cup. The teacarina can also be used as a cup for tea or coffee! It is available in a range of beautiful colors and sells for $18, making it an original yet affordable gift.

The 6 and 4-hole ocarinas are specifically designed for children. The guide I received helps kids learn how to play. It includes short lessons and a demonstration CD. Parents can master the ocarina together with their children - a fun family activity that you can do anytime, anywhere. Just bring the ocarinas along!

If you are concerned that your kids might break their new instrument, consider getting a plastic ocarina. The 6 Hole Plastic Ocarina is recommended for beginners and retails for $8.99. It comes in blue, green, white and yellow and it includes a free instructional book. The 12 Hole Plastic Soprano Ocarina in C Major is also appropriate for beginners and retails for $15. It comes in bright blue, green and pink and also includes a free instructional book and strap.

Check out all of the amazing ocarinas manufactured by STL Ocarina - any of them would make a wonderful holiday gift.

Audio Book Giveaway: Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk by David Sedaris (Ends 12/31) CLOSED

Friday, December 17, 2010 Posted by Dina

Book Description
Featuring David Sedaris's unique blend of hilarity and heart, this new collection of keen-eyed animal-themed tales is an utter delight. Though the characters may not be human, the situations in these stories bear an uncanny resemblance to the insanity of everyday life.

In "The Toad, the Turtle, and the Duck," three strangers commiserate about animal bureaucracy while waiting in a complaint line. In "Hello Kitty," a cynical feline struggles to sit through his prison-mandated AA meetings. In "The Squirrel and the Chipmunk," a pair of star-crossed lovers is separated by prejudiced family members.

With original illustrations by Ian Falconer, author of the bestselling Olivia series of children's books, these stories are David Sedaris at his most observant, poignant, and surprising.

The Giveaway
Thanks to publisher Hachette Book Group, I am hosting a giveaway for three (3) copies of Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk by David Sedaris audio book.

To enter, please comment below what's the last good book you've read - or listened to.

Holiday Gift Guide 2010: The Fashion File by Janie Bryant Review

Friday, December 17, 2010 Posted by Dina

Are you a fan of Mad Men? Do you love fashion? Or maybe you have someone on your holiday list who loves fashion and watches Mad Men, and has been very, very good this year. The Fashion File: Advice, Tips, and Inspiration from the Costume Designer of Mad Men by Janie Bryant with Monica Corcoran Harel is just the book for you.

Book Description
From Joanie's Marilyn Monroe-esque pencil skirts to Betty's classic Grace Kelly cupcake dresses, the clothes worn by the characters of the phenomenal Mad Men have captivated fans everywhere. Now, women are trading in their khakis for couture and their pumas for pumps. Finally, it's hip to dress well again. Emmy-Award winning costume designer Janie Bryant offers readers a peek into the dressing room of Mad Men, revealing the design process behind the various characters' looks and showing every woman how to find her own leading lady style--whether it's vintage, modern, or bohemian.

Bryant's book will peek into the dressing room of Mad Men and reveal the design process behind the various characters' looks. But it will also help women learn how fashion can help convey their personality. She will help them cultivate their style, including all the details that make a big difference.

Bryant offers advice to ensure that a woman's clothes convey her personality. She covers everything from where to find incredible vintage clothing and accessories to how to pair those authentic pieces with modern shoes and jeans. Readers will learn how to find their perfect bra size, use color to convey a mood, and invest in the ten essentials every woman should own. And just so the ladies don't leave their men behind, there's even a section on making them look a little more Don Draper-dashing.

My Review
The Fashion File is a beautifully put together tribute to fashion. Janie Bryant, the designer behind the retro-chic outfits that help make Mad Men a hit show, knows what she is talking - and writing - about. There are tips, ideas, amazing accessories, and wonderful illustrations that are a true inspiration for anyone interested in style. You don't have to spend tons of money - even though in fashion, the best will often cost you a pretty penny - or be a clotheshorse to enjoy this book. I loved the interesting tidbits about history of fashion, the pictures of stylish accessories, and Janie's fun and oh so helpful fashion advice. The photographs and illustrations are amazing, and even though I would not apply every single tip to my wardrobe, I got tons of great ideas out of The Fashion File.

Holiday Gift Guide 2010: The Imperial Cruise by James Bradley Giveaway (Ends 12/31)

Friday, December 17, 2010 Posted by Dina

Are you still looking for the perfect gift for that history buff on your list? The Imperial Cruise by James Bradley came out in paperback last month. This outstanding account of early 20th century American history hit the shelves last year and the hardcover edition has spent six weeks on the New York Times bestseller list, with 275,000 copies in print. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the audio book version of The Imperial Cruise, also available from Hachette Book Group.

Book Description
On the success of his two bestselling books about World War II, James Bradley began to wonder what the real catalyst was for the Pacific War. What he discovered shocked him.

In 1905 President Teddy Roosevelt dispatched Secretary of War William Taft, his daughter Alice, and a gaggle of congressmen on a mission to Japan, the Philippines, China, and Korea with the intent of forging an agreement to divide up Asia. This clandestine pact lit the fuse that would-decades later-result in a number of devastating wars: WWII, the Korean War, and the communist revolution in China.

In 2005, James Bradley retraced that epic voyage and discovered the remarkable truth about America's vast imperial past. Full of fascinating characters brought brilliantly to life, The Imperial Cruise will powerfully revise the way we understand U.S. history.
