Tropical Traditions Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil: Review and Give Away
I've been cooking with Tropical Traditions Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil for almost three years. This wonderful oil is very versatile and has replaced most oils in my kitchen. I still use olive oil for salads and the occasional pat of butter but the Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil has become my oil of choice - for cooking as well as for baking.
The Tropical Traditions Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil is unrefined and made from organic coconuts. The coconuts are used fresh and come from small family farms in the Philippines. According to the company's website, the volcanic soil there makes these coconuts some of the most nutritionally rich coconuts in the world. No chemicals or high-heat treatment are used to make this coconut oil, and it contains no trans-fatty acids.
There are many ways to use coconut oil in the kitchen. You can learn how to use coconut oil on the Tropical Traditions website. In general, any recipe calling for butter, margarine, or other oil can be substituted for coconut oil. I've even used it in smoothies, and always lick the spoon clean - love the taste and the flavor! I've made casseroles with coconut oil, brushed it on meat, sprinkled it on steamed veggies, baked cookies and brownies, and more. My family loves homemade popcorn prepared with coconut oil. Ever since I made my first loaf of bread with it, I've never used any other oil in my bread machine. It is that good.
Nutritionally, one tablespoon of this coconut oil has 117 calories, about the same as my favorite brand of olive oil. I remember the first thing I noticed when I opened the jar was the thickness and the pleasant scent. When I cook with this oil, it makes my kitchen smell wonderfully, too. The coconut oil gives a nice, subtle nutty flavor to the food and it tastes delicious.
