Book #Giveaway: Stories in Uniform from Reader's Digest

Sunday, May 12, 2013 Posted by Dina N

Memorial day is right around the corner and Reader's Digest has released a timely new book - Stories in Uniform: A look at the Heroics, Laughs, and Sacrifices of Our Soldiers.

Book Description
From boot camp to combat, a collection of Reader’s Digest’s unique, emotional, and wide-ranging coverage of military life.

Stories in Uniform is a chronological retrospective of the best military pieces Reader's Digest has run; pieces that will make you weep, make your heart sing, inspire you, enrage you, and make you laugh. Beginning in World War I and continuing though to the war in Iraq, readers will follow soldiers into the trenches, peer in on emergency surgery taking place in the depths of the ocean, watch heroes carry the bodies of fallen brethren, trail Eisenhower for the three days leading up to D-Day, and be inspired as men and women rise above and beyond normal human limits to preserve our rights and save their friends.

Stories include:
  • A moving memorial to D-Day
  • A tribute to one of the first African-Americans to serve as a Naval Officer • A pilot rescued after his F-16 is shot down
  • A soldier returns to the front after losing his foot in action
  • An American soldier who takes a big risk to save a dying Afghan girl
This book gives a complete perspective on the hell that is war, the love that grows from camaraderie, the pride from accomplishing the impossible, the humor that springs from the military bureaucracy, and more.

As I live next to the largest artillery Army base, we have plenty of ceremonies to attend. I try to at least make the Armed Forces Day Parade. It is really something to see. Then we have a big cookout.

Since my dad is in the local VFW Honor Guard & my mom is in the auxiliary, and my grandmother is one of the oldest (she will be 101 in 3 months) remaining widows of a WWI veteran,we spend the day doing cemetery's & the dedication bridge.

growing up, Memorial day is the first potluck picnic of the year. My mother's family would gather for a family reunion at a town park near where the great grandparents orignially settled in Iowa. The farm has long since been sold but it remained the location for the gathering as farflung families would travel from surrounding states for this event. when I grew up in Iowa, school was finished for the year and this reunion was officially the start of my 3 month summer vacation. Now we are in NJ and school is not over until late in June.

I never celebrate memorial day. I always work since my work has time and a half that day.

We certainly think of those who have served our country and continue to serve it. We don't do anything special.
