My Thoughts
Despite my interest in organic cosmetics and body products, I'll admit I've never tried to make my own. I thought it would be too hard, too time consuming, and too expensive. Since I came across Organic Beauty, I realized I could make a variety of natural products for my skin and hair with simple, easy to find ingredients. Some of these ingredients I already have - powdered milk, yogurt, olive oil, coconut oil, cocoa powder, sea salt, cornstarch, sugar, oatmeal, coffee, honey, baking soda, Epsom salt, and more. Others - such as beeswax, glycerin, cocoa butter, and essential oils - are just a click away online or require a trip to a natural foods store.

Organic Beauty With Essential Oil is written in language that's easy to understand, and includes more than 400 recipes to try at home. The recipes are not complicated, the instructions are clear, and many of the products will be fun to make with my kids. The introductory chapter explains essential oils, provides storage and care tips, and methods of use. Artificial food coloring makes me cringe, so I was happy to find recipes for homemade natural food coloring in that section. The remainder of the book is organized in chapters on essential care for the body, face, hair, mouth, hands and nails, and feet. A detailed index concludes the book.

I have bookmarked several recipes and just need a few ingredients to get to work. I especially like the custom-scented versions at the end of each section because they let me use my choice of essential oils plus a few basic ingredients. The recipes are amazingly simple, and I am grateful to Ms. Totilo for putting them together. This is definitely a book I will be using often - like a favorite cookbook for homemade beauty.

I make my own whipped lotion. Seriously, just put coconut oil in a bowl and use a hand mixer to whip in air. Amazing!
