Hamptons Lane Subscription Box {Review} #ad

Saturday, May 31, 2014 Posted by Dina N

These days, it seems subscription boxes are everywhere. Vitamins and supplements, food, makeup, even lingerie boxes let you try new products every month. Some offer little more than a collection of samples while others include full-size products, offered at a discount compared to buying them piecemeal. You might love the products and even discover new favorites. Or, open a box and find you don't really care for some of the contents.

Hamptons Lane is a new e-commerce start up aimed at culinary enthusiasts. Their subscription boxes include artisan foods, kitchen tools and tabletop items. Each box is put together around a specific theme. Last month, Hamptons Lane had a Southwestern Fiesta box. This month, they sent me one of their Coastal Italy boxes for review.

I am a fan of most things Italian, so I was very curious to see what was inside. This month’s box features products from five towns in coastal Italy. The box includes authentic Colatura di Alici anchovy sauce, Faella spaghetti pasta, Antimo Caputo flour, Antichi Uliveti Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Wine Aerating Pourer with a $25 Lot18 gift card for wine. My family enjoyed the spaghetti and olive oil - we love pasta dishes and salads tossed with a simple vinaigrette dressing. I saved the flour for my mom who is an avid baker - I have no doubt she will create something delicious from it, although it may not be the focaccia or pizza suggested by Hamptons Lane. I am not a fan of anchovies, so I passed on the anchovy sauce.

I was hoping to order a bottle of Italian wine from Lot18 to go with the Italian-themed meal and the aerating pourer. Although I found a couple of interesting offerings in the under-$25 category, none shipped to my state. In fact, nothing from Lot18 ships to my state due to legal restrictions. I can, however, buy a bottle of Tuscan red to ship directly to a friend in another state, so the gift card is not a total loss. The aerating pourer worked perfectly on a bottle of Cabernet I already had.

Each Hamptons Lane box retails for $45 (including free shipping) and has a suggested retail price of $75+. That is a 40% savings - with one important caveat: that you like or can use everything included in the box. For me, the Coastal Italy selection was, surprisingly, only half-worth it. Luckily, Hamptons Lane allows members to opt out of boxes that don't interest them. Food is, after all, very personal.

It really does sound like subscription boxes are everywhere! They have them for everything. I think they are pretty neat, especially to try out new products. I have never heard of this one before.

This seems like an interesting idea, to receive monthly boxes of products but not knowing what your getting. It's great for people who love a surprise, but if you get something you don't like so much then it goes to waste.
