Follow the Signs

On any given day, I see hundreds - if not thousands - of signs. As soon as I leave the house, here they are: house numbers, street signs, traffic signs. They are everywhere: on buildings, street corners, stores, offices, schools, and parks. It's hard to imagine what our world would look like without signs.

Signs are rules that we follow: stop signs, speed signs, no trespassing signs. Signs provide information: we can buy coffee at this building, food at that one, and over there are books, computers, cars, clothes and shoes. Some signs scream "danger", others are peacefully reassuring. Signs can remind us about good manners: clean up after your pet, keep our community clean. Signs keep us safe and keep us in line. I don't want to try to envision the chaos of traffic with no road signs. Or how I would go about finding someone's house if the streets had no names.

I follow the signs - sometimes consciously, and at other times, I hardly even notice them. But I surely need them. Don't you?

Green Power! Smoothie #Recipe

I love smoothies. Recently, I've been having them for breakfast. They are delicious and easy to make, ready in a jiffy, and I can even drink them on the go. I use organic ingredients and feel extra virtuous. Plus, I get a good deal of antioxidants, calcium, protein, and fiber - in one yummy drink. It feels me up and gives me energy that lasts all day. My kids love these smoothies as an afternoon snack.

Place the following in a blender:

1 cup fat-free milk
1 cup low-fat plain yogurt
1 cup ice
1 ripe banana, sliced (or 1 cup frozen blueberries, or 1/2 banana and 1/2 cup blueberries)
1-2 scoops (2-4 tbsp.) ground flax seeds
1-2 scoops Antioxidant Omega 3 Greens in berry

Blend until smooth, drink, repeat!

Last but not least, the Thai Curry Chicken Soup has a nice spicy kick and tastes like something that came from a good restaurant.

Chocolate, More Chocolate!

We love chocolate at my house. White chocolate for my husband. Milk chocolate for my kids. Dark chocolate for me. We bake chocolate brownies. We order chocolate birthday cake. In the summer, it's chocolate ice cream. In the winter, it's hot chocolate. Fudge. Truffles. Chocolate-covered fruit year round.

That does not even begin to cover the myriad of ways we celebrate our love of chocolates. Chocolate-dipped biscotti and madeleines. Chocolate-chip cookies. Chocolate croissants. Chocolate milk. I even got some wine that combines the taste of Dutch chocolate and red wine. We don't serve it to the kids, of course.

I would give up many other things before I give up my chocolate. And that's not just in food - I have a chocolate lip balm, chocolate body scrub, and chocolate-flavored soaps and candles.

Valentine's Day is coming up, and chocolate is everywhere. I love the look of those pretty heart-shaped boxes. Maybe it's time to start dropping sweet little hints... A side of chocolate with those red roses, please.

Creative Home Renaissance Cookbook Holder Review

When I am trying a new recipe, I usually keep the cookbook open on the kitchen counter. Or on the kitchen table. If I found the recipe online, I print it out - or write it on an index card. In addition, I have over 100 cookbooks downloaded on my Kindle.

The problem is that some of my cookbooks won't stay open and I keep losing my page. I needed a cookbook holder! I found one I liked on Wayfair.com. The Creative Home Renaissance Cookbook Holder is metal, with a nice finish and pretty decorative accents. I can fold it and stash it away when I am not using it. Most of my cookbooks fit nicely in there, and I can even use it to prop up my Kindle.

Academie Gear School Shoes Review

My daughter wears a uniform to school. Shopping for uniforms is easy: many stores carry shirts, pants, and skirts that meet the dress code. Some of these items are not available year-round but I can always find what I need online. Finding the best school shoes is a little trickier. I want something that is comfortable for daily wear and can survive walking, running, jumping, and everything else my active girl does all day.

We discovered the perfect school shoes by accident. One summer, I was working my way down the list of uniform clothing at a specialty store. My daughter was trying this and that, and the store was crowded with back-to-school shoppers. Finally, we had everything we needed except for the shoes. I looked through the slim pickings: shoes with laces and Mary Janes in black, blue, and brown. At that time, my daughter had not mastered tying her shoes yet, so it was a no-brainer. Besides, the Mary Jane shoes were cuter - at least as cute as a pair of school-approved shoes can be. They were well-made of good quality leather and had rubber soles. The shoes closed with Velcro strips and seemed sturdy enough. I was not familiar with the Academie Gear brand but we had spent a long time shopping for school that day, and I did not feel like going to yet another store to look for shoes.

My daughter tried on the shoes and loved them. I quickly added them to the pile and thanked my lucky stars that we had taken care of the whole shopping list. Since then, she has been wearing a pair of Lauren shoes from Academie Gear at least five days a week when school is in session. She even wears them on the weekends, on vacation, and on special occasions. The shoes go well with everything and show very little wear. We just get a new pair every year when she outgrows them. I think wireless internet would be such a good solution for me since I’m a stay at home mom but I’m really itching to find something to do full time, too. Best Ever Pumpkin Muffins #Recipe

These tasty, flavorful, and wonderfully moist pumpkin muffins are a new favorite in my house. I will never again look with longing at another store-bought muffin! I've adapted an easy Pumpkin-Chocolate Chip Muffins recipe I found in Make the Bread, Buy the Butter by Jennifer Reese. Her pumpkin pie recipe is pure bliss, too! Even when I cheat a little and make it with refrigerated pie crust, it still rocks. Ms. Reese is quickly becoming my pumpkin hero.

I've eliminated the oil from the original recipe, and used ground flax in lieu of eggs. That makes the muffins a good option for vegetarians and health-minded folks. I also use alternative sweeteners instead of granulated sugar - you can experiment with Truvia, Splenda with fiber, or whatever you prefer. Next time, I will half the light brown sugar as I have a feeling the end results will not suffer, and will be even healthier. For even more healthily adventurous muffins, I would try replacing some of the white flour with rolled oats or whole wheat flour. Or maybe not - these pumpkin muffins are already perfect!

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg
1/4 tsp. ground cloves (I skipped it)
1/2 tsp. ground ginger (I skipped it)
1/4 tsp. ground allspice (I skipped it)
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt (I used sea salt, and original recipe calls for kosher salt)
1 cup pumpkin puree
1/2 cup apple sauce (original recipe calls for neutral vegetable oil)
1 cup brown rice syrup or agave nectar (I used a mix of the two, about 2/3 cup brown rice syrup and 1/3 cup maple-flavored agave nectar; original recipe calls for 1 cup granulated sugar)
1/3 cup light brown sugar, packed
2 tbsp. ground flax seeds and 6 tbsp. water (original recipe calls for 2 eggs)
1 tsp. vanilla extract
Neutral vegetable oil, for greasing - if not using paper liners (I used canola oil spray)

If you can't do without your chocolate, just add 2/3 cup semisweet chocolate chips before baking, and voila - Pumpkin-Chocolate Chip Muffins!

Preheat oven to 350F.
In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, baking soda, salt and other dry spices if using.
In another bowl, mix the pumpkin, apple sauce, ground flax, water, sugar, and vanilla. If using the eggs, granulated sugar and oil from the original recipe, first beat the pumpkin with the oil and sugars, then add the eggs, one at a time, before beating in the vanilla. For me, simple mixing was enough.
Stir in the dry ingredients.
Line 12 muffin cups with paper liners, or lightly grease. Scoop in the batter.
Bake for 22-25 minutes. A toothpick inserted in the center of a muffin should come out clean. Serve warm, or cool and store at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 5 days.

These don't last more than two days around here. Enjoy with warm milk, coffee, or hot chocolate. Mmmmm!

My Thoughts
Last Man Standing is a heady mix of action, suspense, and romance, all bundled up in a neat page turner plot. There is plenty of heat and sizzle between the main characters but romance takes the occasional back seat to intrigue and danger. A macho special ops agent is rotting in a Sierra Leone prison. He can use the help of a former wallflower-turned-modern-warrior princess who saves the day with her appealing combination of brains, beauty, and brawn. There's a bit of role reversal at the beginning but Joe and Stephanie end up as equal partners, working side by side to stop a treacherous villain. If you like your romance with a side of gun powder, you'll enjoy this book.

Last Man Standing is coming out on January 31, new from Pocket Star.

My Thoughts
A Lady Never Surrenders is the last one from Sabrina Jeffries' The Hellions of Halstead Hall books. The series follows the story of five siblings - the "hellions" - three brothers and two sisters. They are faced with their grandmother's ultimatum: marry by year's end, or lose their inheritance. Each book tells the story of one of them scrambling to meet gran's demands and find love at the same time. A Lady Never Surrenders is about Lady Celia, the youngest sister, who hopes to outmaneuver their stubborn grandmother without depriving her siblings from inheriting their due. She recruits Jackson Porter, a Bow Street runner who the family has hired to find out the truth about her parents's death, to investigate her suitors. Lady Celia gets more than she bargained for: Jackson is no ordinary employee, and their mutual attraction grows as they spend more time together. In addition, the two are trying to solve the cold case of the murder of Celia's parents, crossing an unknown someone who tries to stop them at all cost.

A Lady Never Surrenders features likable characters, witty conversation, an old mystery, and an abundance of passion and danger. Last year, I enjoyed reading book #3 in the series, How to Woo a Reluctant Lady. Now I plan to go back and read the other three novels in The Hellions of Halstead Hall series. If they are anything like this one, I know I am in for a fun adventure.

My Thoughts
The Body Language of Dating is a fascinating look at dating and body language. While I have not been on the dating scene for years, I found the book completely engrossing. Ms. Reiman writes about the body language of dating in a knowledgeable yet accessible way, with a healthy dose of humor. She discusses how evolution has shaped the modern man and woman, how we define attractiveness, what physical characteristics say about one's capacity for commitment, and many other interesting topics.

Tonya Reiman has written a smart and refreshing book - and you don't have to be dating to enjoy it. She is the author of two other previous books, The Power of Body Language: How to Succeed in Every Business and Social Encounter and The Yes Factor: Get What You Want. Say What You Mean. I've added both to my to-read list, and I suggest you do the same with The Body Language of Dating.

Thai Chicken Slow Cooker #Recipe

I adapted a slow cooker recipe for Thai Pork Stew I found at Busy Working Mama. We love pork but I had some chicken in the freezer, so Thai Chicken it was. This easy meal is full of flavor, and you can add more veggies - carrots, snap peas, whatever strikes your fancy.

Place the following items in the slow cooker on low for 8 hours or on high for 4 1/2.

1 1/2 - 2 pounds boneless skinless chicken breast, cut into 1-inch cubes
2 red bell peppers cut into strips
1 cup sliced baby carrots
1 cup shredded cabbage
12 oz Teriyaki sauce
2 tablespoons rice or white wine vinegar
1-2 teaspoons crushed red pepper (I skipped this and used 1 teaspoon Seven Spice seasoning)
2 garlic cloves, minced

Add 1/2 cup peanut butter and stir well before serving. Top with 1/2 cup chopped green onions and 2-3 tablespoons chopped roasted peanuts. Serve over steamed rice or noodles. Enjoy!

Organic Coconut Water Vinegar from Tropical Traditions #Giveaway

An Appetite for Murder by Lucy Burdette is a delightful cozy mystery, full of quirky characters and delicious food. The heroine, Hayley, is trying to land her dream job as a food critic at a local magazine. Her chances are slim since one of the owners of the publication is dating Hayley's ex. Then the other woman turns up dead - poisoned with a homemade dessert. Hayley quickly becomes number one suspect and now she must clear her name if she wants to stay out of prison.

Ms. Burdette writes with genuine affection for her characters, love for great food and first-hand knowledge of charming Key West. Her wit and sense of humor makes the book even more delectable. This cozy mystery is the first in a new Key West food critic series, and I can't wait for seconds.

Healthy Banana Muffins #Recipe

I had a few ripe bananas sitting on the counter and begging to become banana muffins. I needed something heavy on the bananas and light on the sugar. The kids helped make an even healthier version of a recipe I found at GroupRecipes.com. The original version is below, and my substitutions are listed in bold.

Ingredients
2 eggs, beaten (or 2 tbsp. flax and 6 tbsp. water)
3 very ripe bananas, mashed
2 cups all-purpose flour (or 1 1/2 cups flour and 1/2 cup rolled oats)
3/4 cup white sugar (or 1/4 cup Splenda with fiber and 1/4 cup Truvia)
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
+ 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease or line 10 muffin cups (I used 9 in a nonstick pan).

In a medium bowl, mash bananas well.
Combine eggs (flax, water) and bananas.
In a separate bowl, mix together flour, salt, sugar and baking soda.
Stir banana mixture into flour mixture. Fold in walnuts if desired.
Pour batter into prepared muffin cups.

Bake in preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into center of a muffin comes out clean. (I baked for just 15 minutes).

The muffins were soft, moist, and delicious! The kids thought they were having dessert... My daughter - the sweet tooth - said they were much, much better than she expected ;-) Next time, I will try cutting the sugar to 1/4 cup, use 1 cup oats and 1 cup flour, and add some nuts for a little crunch. Serve with a glass of milk or a cup of coffee. These muffins freeze well if you have any left - then you get nutritious breakfast in just 15 seconds. Enjoy!

Speaking the Language

In high school and college, I wanted to see the world. I dreamed of visiting Italy and Australia, Paris and London, Venice and Vienna, Budapest and Madrid. I read travel guides, I leafed through photo albums, I devoured books. And I took classes: Italian, French, Russian, Spanish... I wanted to order a pain au chocolate and cafe au lait rather than a chocolate croissant and coffee with milk.

Visiting a foreign country is an amazing experience, no matter what language I use to communicate. English works in many places, especially in larger cities or touristy areas. Yet, being able to speak the language and understand the signs, the conversations, even the lyrics of songs took my travel to a whole new level. I will never forget the taste of lasagna and tiramisu at an Italian ristorante off Piazza San Marco, or the sense of accomplishment when the waiter complimented my Italian. Looking at the Eiffel Tower while sipping on that cafe au lait I ordered in clear French was not too shabby, either.

I've enjoyed a ride in a gondola, a stroll in the Luxembourg Gardens, and a walk down Kartner Strasse. I've seen the Christmas lights along Champs Elysees, the view from the top of the Eiffel Tower, the Mona Lisa and the Palace of Versailles. I feel fortunate to have visited some amazing places and can't wait to share my wanderlust with my kids when they are old enough to appreciate it. Some say that speaking a foreign language is a treasure, and I want my children to feel as rich as I do.

Learning a foreign language takes time, dedication, and lots of practice. If you don't have the time or the inclination, there are always translation companies that can help. Whether you need some paperwork translated, an interpreter for a business trip or a local guide to show you the sights, speaking the language or having someone who does is priceless.

The Pleasure of Your Kiss by Teresa Medeiros is a historical romance with likable characters, intriguing plot, and tons of witty dialogue. This delicious adventure is set against the exotic background of a harem. The hero is dangerously attractive, the heroine is beautiful, smart and stubborn, and sparks are flying in every direction. Danger and desire are at every turn. I loved the main characters, Clarinda and Ashton, and also the sultan and Clarinda's friend. I enjoyed the book and could not put it down. It's my first Teresa Medeiros novel but will certainly not be the last. All of her previous books have been national bestsellers and are now on my to-read list.

My Thoughts
The Yoga Club is a funny and entertaining novel that's perfect for a rainy day. The characters are likable and, for the most part, convincing despite a few cliches here and there. The author, Cooper Lawrence, is very knowledgeable about celebrity culture, and famous name dropping abounds. Although I somewhat enjoyed that aspect of the book, I feel the story line would not have suffered if no celebrity had been mentioned.

In The Yoga Club, four very different people are brought together by their decision to dress up as Sarah Palin at a ritzy Halloween party. They witness the Greenwich mayor in a suspicious situation that looks a lot like murder. The foursome soon find out that someone wants to silence them at any cost. Danger brings them close, and the morning yoga classes they attend together bring them even closer. At the end, everyone gets what they deserve, and lives happily - or not - ever after.

I read Real Moms Love to Eat in one day. Then I read it again. I felt like I've spent time with a good girlfriend who happens to love great food as much as I do. Real Moms Love to Eat (RMLTE) is a book about healthy eating but it's not just another diet book. It's a celebration of fabulous food - without adding inches to your waistline. My Thoughts
Warrior's Redemption is a fun romance read with a sprinkling of magic and time travel thrown in the mix. It's the second Melissa Mayhue book I've read, after A Highlander Destiny - one of the books in the Daughters of the Glen series - almost two years ago. In the new novel, Ms. Mayhue adds a touch of Norse mythology to her entertaining time-travel romances.The story is well written, with nicely developed characters. There's love that spans centuries, magical abilities, adventure, danger, and a wicked villain who wants to rule the world. Warrior's Redemption is the first in a brand-new spinoff series that I am looking forward to reading.

My Thoughts
I love Michael Bublé's music and enjoyed reading On Stage, Off Stage. The text part written by the singer takes about a quarter of the volume. The rest of the book contains the amazing photographs of Dean Freeman. On Stage, Off Stage is halfway between an autobiography and a photo book, both telling the story of a remarkable musician. I recommend reading it while listening to Michael's Crazy Love - or any of his other albums. Have a friend who loves Michael's music? Get them On Stage, Off Stage as a gift. By the way, he's got a newly released Christmas album...

My Thoughts
The Big-Ass Book of Crafts 2 is the follow up to The Big-Ass Book of Crafts that came out almost four years ago. If you are a Mark Montano fan, you are probably familiar with his books and TV shows. There are over 150 craft ideas in the new crafts book, and some of them have my hands itching just looking at the pictures. There's jewelry, accessories, furniture, pillows, and more. While I will not be making every single one - zipper necklace? baby doll head night light? hangers on table base? - many are real winners that will make the least crafty among us run for Michaels. Beaded fringe necklace... striped ribbon scarf... hurricanes... super striped mailbox... pyramid side table... Bauhaus striped table base and stool... Get a load of supplies and hope to be snowed in so there's enough time to create all these fab projects.

The Big-Ass Book of Crafts 2 came out in October from Gallery Books and would make a great gift for the craft-minded. Pair it up with a gift card to a crafts store, and your friends and family just might present you with their own Mark Montano masterpiece next year.

The Sink As an Art Form

Ever heard of vessel sinks? Until recently, I had not. Now I can spend a lot of time browsing for that perfect vessel sink. Some of them look like modern art. Others look like beautiful fruit bowls. How fantastic is this True Planet Glass Sink Bowl? It puts me in instant bath makeover mode.

I found many sinks I like at Bathroom Vessel Sinks. I had no idea there were so many great options out there. I would not mind seeing the Wave Rim Multi Color Glass Vessel Sink first thing in the morning in my bathroom, either. Should I hurry up and write a letter to Santa? Or strategically position a pretty printout where hubby can see it? Decisions, decisions... Then of course the bathroom tiles must match the new sink... and get a new vessel faucet for it... Now I need to go explore vessel sink faucets. I love the ones finished in antique copper. Or those that look like old-fashioned water pumps. Then there's those that look like modern art and those that blend modern and classic - a piece of thick glass over brushed nickel or oil rubbed bronze.

The sink - and the faucet - as an art form. Now that's a topic worth exploring next year.

My Thoughts
Digital Photography is an excellent basic guide to photography, written accessibly and illustrated with some gorgeous photos. Photography has been my passion for years and even more so once I switched to digital. Capturing a beautiful moment on camera and being able to enjoy it any time I like is just irresistible.

Digital Photography includes eight chapters that cover important topics such as digital capture, camera lens, camera exposure, lighting, image editing and more. It's not a book to be read in a couple of sittings but one that I will be referring to regularly. I am enjoying this guide and highly recommend it to anyone who loves clicking away with a purpose as much as I do. Head over to the nearest bookstore, or to Amazon and other online retailers to snag a copy for yourself or for a friend. I will be buying a few as gifts for my shutterbug pals.

It's a matter of personal preference - I like those without a key because it's one less key I have to remember to bring along. Holiday Gift Guide 2011: An Early Visit from Santa

Last week, we went to a party where Santa showed up for a visit. My kids were delighted to meet him and share what they wished for this year. They posed for pictures and of course got an early gift from Santa.

The first toy that came out of Santa's bag was a toy ice cream maker. This toy makes delicious real ice cream and sorbet. It's very easy to use - just put in the ingredients, press a button and wait for four hours while the treats cool off in the freezer. Kids can even make two different flavors at once. The ice cream maker comes with a set of four very cute bowls, matching spoons and an ice cream scoop. Plus, there is a recipe booklet with ten yummy recipes, complete with decorating ideas.

The ice cream maker needs 4 AA batteries that are not included, so make sure Santa remembers those. I recommend using rechargeable ones since they last just three ice cream making cycles.

The second toy that Santa brought us was a set of three baskets with play food. There's a basket with breakfast food, another with lunch food, and a third with dinner items. My kids love pretend play and these toys are perfect. Each item is realistic looking and well made, practically guaranteeing hours of fun. We already have an adorable cookware set from Green Toys and their toy tea set. An elf told me that our local Costco has the play food set for around $20 - score! Or, you can buy them on Amazon with one or two day shipping to arrive in time for Christmas.

Of course, we have a few more items on our wish list this year. Since we are on the subject of pretend cooking, check out the adorable play kitchenette from Mega Bloks. It's cute, fun, and won't break Santa's bank. It does not take much space, either - unlike bigger models. And, all parts fit inside for easy storage.

The recipes are divided into Snacks and Miscellany, Soups and Starters, Mains and Dinners, and Breads, Cakes, Desserts and Bisciuts. This is a small cookbook that packs a variety of wonderful traditional recipes. This is the first time I've come across a collection of Irish cooking, and I have bookmarked many recipes I'd like to try. Nanna's Chicken Soup, for example - easy, healthy, and delicious! I cannot ask more of a meal. How about Rachel’s Granny’s Simple Potato Soup, or Granny’s Northern Irish Stuffing? Guinness is my favorite beer but I've never used it for cooking - I am definitely making the Guinness beef stew. And those desserts sound heavenly. Mother's Pudding? Granny Sullivan's Mystery Steam Cake? Summer Strawberry Cream? Mmmm...

#Book Review: The Best of Me by Nicholas Sparks

My Thoughts
The Best of Me is a touching love story, deeply emotional and with a touch of the miraculous. Amanda and Dawson have a first love that's meant to last forever - until life intervenes and tears them apart. Over two decades later, Amanda has a family of her own but Dawson has never really moved on in his emotional life. The death of an old friend brings the two together, and fulfilling his last wishes, Amanda and Dawson get a second chance.

Mr. Sparks has written a masterfully complex drama that I just could not put down. The characters are believable and well-drawn, and the ending is unusual but not quite unexpected. Fans of Nicholas Sparks will surely enjoy his latest novel. It will make a great movie but first, you should read the book.

The Best of Me is new this fall from Grand Central Publishing, a division of Hachette Book Group.

Holiday Safety Tips from Master Lock

The holiday season is a busy time: cooking, decorating, shopping for gifts, holiday travel... During such hectic times, it is important to keep safety and security in mind. Today, I am pleased to share a Holiday Safety Checklist from Master Lock.

1. Travel Safely. Whether you're planning a road trip or flight, be sure to take all the proper safety precautions. If driving to your destination, check tire pressure beforehand for optimal handling and traction and consider having your car winterized by your mechanic for added safety. Stock your car with a safety kit in case you were to get stuck. Check weather forecasts and road conditions before heading out for safe driving conditions.

If you're flying to your destination, remember to secure your luggage with TSA-accepted locks, such as the Master Lock 4689T Luggage Lock, so your bags stay safe while in transit -- whether they're checked or carried on. If you're flying with holiday gifts, keep them unwrapped to avoid security checkpoint delays.

2. Secure Your Home. During the holiday season, you're likely to have guests coming and going from your home for a number of get-togethers. Be sure all entry points, including doors, windows and sliding glass doors, are locked before and after guests depart to help keep your family, home and valuables safe.

If you're traveling out of town, enlist a trusted neighbor to keep an eye on your home while you're away. Store a spare key in a key safe, such as the Master Lock 5400D, for easy access by authorized visitors. Stop your mail and newspaper delivery, and consider setting some interior and exterior lights on timers.

3. Shop Smart. To stay safe while enjoying a fun holiday shopping trip to the local mall or shopping center, be aware of your surroundings. Park in well-lit areas, avoiding spaces next to large vehicles that can block the line of sight to your car if possible, make sure you aren't followed when exiting the mall and lock your doors immediately upon re-entering your vehicle. Keep purchased gifts out of sight -- in the trunk of your car or under a blanket -- to prevent theft.

My Best Ever Baby Gift

When I was expecting my first child, I was a tad overwhelmed by the sheer number and variety of baby products out there. Onesies, blankets, diapers, bouncers, bibs, swings, activity mats, toys, cribs, bottles, books... There were so many products, so many choices. Some of these choices were easy, others seemed to be a matter of life or death. As many first-time moms, I was the fortunate guest of honor at several baby showers. We received many fantastic gifts that came in very handy during the first months of parenthood.

The one gift that we used for the longest time was the baby stroller. We had a Combi and we put some serious mileage on it over the years. My firstborn loved that stroller. She would fall asleep in it within 10 minutes flat - and if you ever took care of an infant, you'd understand how thankful we were for that. I walked, I shopped, I sat on park benches reading books or chatting to friends. She slept, she snacked, she watched the world go by. A win-win. And when baby #2 came along, that stroller was the gift that kept on giving.

My Thoughts
Silver Sparks is a wickedly funny contemporary romance with a sprinkling of mystery and plenty of sizzle. It takes place in a Colorado town where Maggie Larkin owns a store. The resort is also a playground for the rich and famous who are used to getting whatever they want. When Maggie refutes the advances of one such playboy / reality star, she gets in a serious mess. Tabloid reporters follow her every move and distort her every word. She loses business and gains threats, and that's only the beginning. Luckily for Maggie, off-duty detective Cal Drummond is in town to investigate just how the playboy in question mistreats the women who cross his path. Cal is not about to be intimidated by anyone - and he is in her corner. But there is a killer on the loose, and danger gets very close to Maggie and her family.

My Thoughts
Head Over Heels is the third Jill Shalvis book that I've had the pleasure to read. Jill is a New York Times Bestselling Author of many romance novels, and her latest does not disappoint.

Head Over Heels is the third novel in Jill Shalvis's Lucky Harbor series. The series is about three sisters who inherit an old inn when their mom passes away. Although related to the first two novels, Simply Irresistible and The Sweetest Thing, Head Over Heels can be enjoyed as a stand-alone book.

Head Over Heels focuses on the youngest sister, Chloe, a free spirit who hates to be tied down by people or places. At first, she does not want to stay in the little coastal town, and resists the responsibilities of running an inn with her estranged sisters. Chloe is equally opposed to the growing attraction between her and the local sheriff. Gradually, the town, her sisters, and the attractive lawman change Chloe's life in ways she never expected.

Head Over Heels is a fun contemporary romance with likable characters and interesting plot. It's perfect light reading, and I recommend that you check out the other two books in the Lucky Harbor series if you haven't read them yet. It's hard to believe that Billy Joel began his recording career 40 years ago. This fall, Sony Music /Legacy Recordings is commemorating this talented musician with a special release of Piano Man (2 CD Legacy Edition).

Piano Man is Billy Joel's debut album with Columbia Records. The new release includes the remastered 10-song original album. A second disc presents for the first time Billy's live performance at Philadelphia's Sigma Sound Studio on April 15, 1972. I enjoy Billy Joel's music and loved listening to the new release. My favorite is the second CD in the Piano Man set because of the magic and palpable energy of his live performance. Even at that early stage in his musical career, it's clear that Billy Joel's talent will go a long way.

Piano Man was released on November 8, the same day that Billy Joel - The Complete Albums Collection came out. This remarkable edition has the complete catalog of 14 Billy Joel albums, from 1971's ColdSpring Harbor through 1979's Grammy-winning Album of The Year 52nd Street and 1981's live Songs In The Attic to 2001's Fantasies & Delusions, the first album of Billy's classical compositions. Each album has been remastered in 24 bit audio and comes in cardboard jackets replicating the original album covers and sleeves.

Both of these editions would make wonderful gifts for Billy Joel fans and for music buffs.

Holiday Gift Guide 2011: Libre Tea Mug #Giveaway

Earlier this year, I blogged about Libre Tea. This company's tea glass lets me brew fresh loose leaf tea anytime, anywhere. Today, I have another gift idea that's just perfect for tea drinkers: the Libre Tea mug.

The Libre Tea mug has a glass interior, a durable poly carbonate exterior and a removable tea filter under a twist-on lid. It keeps my tea warm inside but the outside stays cool to the touch. If my kids grab it, the tea will not spill or burn their fingers - as long as I smartly keep the lid on, of course. I can keep my tea right next to my laptop as I work, and not worry about spills or damaged furniture and equipment. The mug is just the right size - 10 oz - and it's well made and pretty to boot.

There are two ways to prepare loose leaf tea using the Libre tea mug: place the tea in the mug or on top of the twist off filter. Using it is easy - see how here. I prefer having the tea in the filter. When the tea is ready, I remove the filter and lid and - hello, wonderful Kashmiri chai. Then I can put the lid back on to keep the drink where it belongs.

Just as all Libre glasses, the mug is BPA free and wonderful for any tea beverage. In addition to these fantastic tea glasses, Libre offers organic Ming Mei green tea that I have yet to try.

You can choose gift cards from retailers such as Macy’s, JCPenney, Sears, Starbucks, iTunes, Lowes, Gap and Old Navy, Chili’s and Best Buy, among many others. Some exclusions do apply, and the rewards offer may vary by market, so customers are encouraged to visit their local store for more information.
